The Jones Family
Calvin Wade Jones was b. 14 Oct 1826 in Mississippi. He married Dicey WHETSTONE in about 1857/58 in Texas.Dicey was the daughter of Anderson WHETSTONE and Margaret E. GILLESPIE.
C.W. and Dicey are listed in the 1860 Hunt County, Texas Census. C.W.'s brother, Silas, is listed in the home with them. Please look for it in the *CENSUS* section on the mainpage, as this page has been updated.
The War Between the States began in 1861. With it came the need for Texans to protect the homeland. Calvin enlisted with the Texas State Troops, Hunt County, Beat No. 8, 14th Brigade, and was elected 2nd Sgt., serving under Captain James M. Huey. I'm still working on exactly what this unit did, and would like to track their movements. I expect to have more information soon and will include that here as I get it sorted out.
Dicey died before 1872. We know this because in that year, C.W. married her sister, Allie (Amanda), in Hunt County on 2 May 1872. At this time, we are still searching for her place of burial. It's possible that we may never know where she is due to the way burials were handled and graves marked during that time.
Children of Calvin and Dicey JONES:
1. Perry Silas b. 16 May 1858 (in an interview ca. 1937, he states he was born in 1861 in Hunt County); d. 8 July 1949 in Hobart, Kiowa Co., OK. m. Rebecca E. RILEY in Texas, 1889. Becky was b. 1872 in Hunt Co., TX. to Henry McDonnell RILEY and Ruth WILLIAMS; 2. Richard A. JONES b. abt. 1859 in Hunt County, TX.; 3. Worick BEN JONES; and 4. Cal W. JONES.
It appears the family may have moved around a bit, as the last census showing Dicey and C.W. together is the 1860 Hunt Co. Census. We pick up C.W. in the 1880 Jack Co., TX. Census, where he is listed alone. We also know that C.W. died in Jack Co. in 1894.
I had the opportunity to visit the cemetery he was laid to rest in, and though his headstone is in desperate need of replacement, it was beautifully done. Many of the graves there are marked with only a wooden cross, or not at all. C.W.'s headstone has broken over the years, and someone has tried to preserve it as best as they can by using cement to repair a crack, and to also anchor the top half of it to the other side at its base. I would like to find out who this person was and thank them.
PERRY SILAS JONES:
Perry grew up in Northwest Texas "...in the counties between Hunt Co. and the present Oklahoma southern boundary..." (SOURCE: Bicentenial Feature, 1937). He went to Indian Territory in 1886 and worked on the ranch of Jim Knox. Perry worked as a cattle driver, driving them along the "Great Western Cattle Trail". In 1887, he was working for the Edlemond Brothers who owned the Cross S Cattle. He tells us that their headquarters were located in a dugout close to the mouth of Turkey Creek near present day Altus, OK. He also worked under U.S. Marshals Bob Ketchner, Tom Lillie, and John Climmons (possibly "Clemmons") in tracking outlaws who were running rampant in the territory stealing stock and other goods, as well as using the Territory as a hideout. Perry was appointed to help chase down rustlers. In the 1937 interview, this is what Perry had to say: "I remember the capture of the Crow boys....We had quite a fight with them, they had stolen horses and cattle and killed an officer. We finally got them and they were taken to Paris, Texas, for trial; one of them was wounded but not badly." Perry returned to Texas in 1888 and in 1889, he married Miss Becky Riley, returning to the Territory in 1889.
Perry and Becky settled in Indian Territory in 1889, 25 miles east of Duncan, OK. When the Territory was opened up for settlers in 1907, Perry and Becky settled in Kiowa County, making them Pioneers. Perry and Becky had four children:
Ica Dora JONES b.28 Sept 1890 m. Leonard (Len) PERRY. She d. 27 Jun 1975 in Kiowa County. (my gr.gr.Grandparents); 2. Arthur McDonald JONES b. 8 Dec. 1891 d. 24 Jan 1962; 3. Bertha Lee JONES b. 26 May 1893; and 4. Dollie Pearl b. 6 Nov 1909 d. 27 Mar 1911. Dollie died of a rattlesnake bite, dying the same day.
