D-6.       David Truax, Jr. m. 4-8-1824 in Preble CO., OHIO, by Robert Rhea, J. P. Sarah Lewellen, b. 1-29-1800 in Kentucky, daughter of John Lewellen.  David was a farmer but he taught school for a time in Preble County.  In 1848 he sold his land in Dixon Township, Preble County and immigrated to Howard County, Indiana, where he purchased two eighty-acre tracts of land and entered two or three other tracts of the same area.  Each of these had upon it a log house, and on the place he bought there were fifteen acres cleared.  This was not far south of the farm of his brother, Samuel, in Miami County.  Samuel had moved to Miami County just two years before and remained there until 1853.  Before David was in condition to meet any calamity, his house and everything in it were consumed by fire.  This was on the 4th of July.  It was supposed by many, but not by David, that the house was set on fire by Indians, many of whom were still in the country.  David had only fifty cents left and his credit with which to begin anew.  His neighbors rallied to his aid and soon he had another house erected, this time a double log structure.  He set to work and soon was a leading farmer in the community, cultivating the largest area of all.  During his life he succeeded in reducing to fine state of cultivation one hundred acres of good land.  He continued to reside in the double (Some of the above from History of Cass, Miami, Howard and Tipton Counties, Indiana.)  In 1856, Matilda (Clark) Truax, wife of James M., eldest son of David and Sarah Truax, died leaving three young children.  David and Sarah took their grandchildren Alonzo, 8, Artemas, 4, and Minnie, 2, into their home.  About the same time their daughter, Mary, wife of Joseph Dixon, died leaving two children: John, 4, and Laura, 3.  David and Sarah took these two grandchildren also, to care for them.  Matilda and Mary both died during a typhoid epidemic, which took eight of the relatives in just a few weeks' time.  During the Civil War, while James M. was serving in the Army, Mary (Poff) his second wife, took their two children.  Eddie and Dora, and went to live with her husband's parents.  Both are buried in the Old Cemetery at Cassville, Indiana.
