Albert Pendleton Taylor Albert P. Taylor was born March 7, 1845 in Craig County, VA, a son of Charles L. Taylor, who died in 1865, and Maria (Fisher) Taylor, who died in 1869. At the age of sixteen years, when the Civil War was inaugurated, A. P. Taylor enlisted in Company K, Forty Sixty Virginia Infantry. He entered the service at Craig Court House, was sent to Richmond, thence to Norfolk, and from there to Nags Head, North Carolina. Going thence to Roanoke Island, he was taken prisoner and held for fourteen days, was paroled and returned home. Seven months later, he joined Company H, Eighth Virginia Cavalry and took part in the Campaigns of West Virginia, East Tennessee, and in the Shenandoah Valley. He took part in the battles of Second Winchester, Fishers Hill, Piedmont, Hatchers Run and numerous other engagements. At Piedmont, he shot and killed a man who was attempting to pierce him with a bayonet. His brigade covered the retreat of Lee toward Appomattox and then was engaged after the surrender, not having known it at the time. Samuel H. Taylor brother of A. P. enlisted in 1862 and was leader of an Army Band until the close of the war. In November 1867, Albert P. Taylor married Harriet R. Sarver, whose parents were natives of Giles, (now Craig County, VA.) She was born in 1848 and died May 2, 1869 leaving no children. On April 14, 1870, he married Adaline D. Huffman in Craig County and their children are recorded: - Alonzo O. born January 15, 1871, died July 17 following; Pearlie G. born April 8, 1872; Lelia J. born January 6, 1874; Egbert Minor born December 28, 1876; Erastus C. born April 13, 1881 – died September 30 following. Adaline D., wife of Mr. Taylor, was born in Craig County February 4, 1847, a daughter of Martin and Mary A. (Caldwell) Huffman. Her mother died in 1859 and her father is still living in Craig County. June 2, 1870, Albert Pendleton Taylor became a resident of Giles County and he is engaged in farming and stock raising in Newport District with address as Newport, Giles County, Virginia. (note – We believe that his home place is in the Clover Hollow section of Newport, VA.) |
