Trotter (Hampton)

The Trotters are one of my most complicated lines with twists and turns behind every answer I get.

The farthest back I have gone with some certainty is my great-grandfather Harrison "Monk" Trotter (b. May 1, 1890 Johnsville, AR (or possibly Fordyce, Dallas Co, AR)- d. 9 Apr. 1975 Pine Lodge Nursing Home, AR) pictured on the Main page.

By his own story he is the child of Sam Trotter and Josephine Johnson. Harrison was listed with his aunt and uncle, Jane (Trotter) and Levi Hampton and I have very slim evidence for Sam Trotter being present in the area beyond the age of 15. Levi Hampton appears to have been a long lived man of mixed background or at least light enough to be listed as mulatto in one census. Jane was--at least--his third wife and nearly 20 years his junior. Both my father and grandfather were named for him, (Harrison's son and grandson).

Going back to Harrison the generation that produced him consisted of again at least four children of Eliza whom married a James Newton and resided with him and their children at the time of the 1870 Census:

  1. Rile Trotter m. Alice ??
    1. Maggie Trotter
    2. John T. Trotter
    3. Dave Trotter
  2. Jane Trotter
  3. Sam Trotter
  4. Matt Trotter md. Josephine King
According to our family traditions Harrison's siblings included:
This first was probably listed with Matt Trotter in 1900 as his Nephew.
  1. Matt Trotter

These four were listed with Etta (Stanfield) Trotter as her step-children in 1900. Etta married Ed Thompson, Sam Trotter, and Ezekiel Hemphill.

  2. Henry Trotter
  3. Pearlie Trotter m. George Webb
  4. Susan Trotter m. John Newton (later husband of Irene below; see also Newton's below)
  5. Cora Trotter (the only child of Etta and Sam) m. 1. Oscar Dee Newton 2. Schaffer Steppes

The children of Sam Trotter and Maggie Goodlaw (dau. of Sarah Goodlaw or Goodlock):

  6. Sarah Trotter b. 06 May 1896, m. Russell Butler, and d. 04 Feb. 1992, Jefferson Regional Medical Center, AR.
  7. Richard Trotter (only mentioned in census)
Here is the line I am certain of.

Harrison Trotter md. Rhoda Rogers (dau. of Pete and Molly Rogers). They had (birth order--thank you Jr.!):

  1. Roseanna Lee Trotter b. 1911 m. Leroy Hampton
  2. Daisy Mae Trotter b. 1913

  11. Charlene Trotter b. 1929 m. Melvin Harrison
  12. James Tyler Trotter b. 24 June 1931 m. Maurine Bluford
  13. Clorene Trotter b. 1933 m. ? Belin
  14. Robert Trotter b. 1935 m. Nell
  15. Ometha Trotter b. 1938 m. Thomas Lowe

My grandfather was Levie Trotter b. 24 Feb. 1921, Bradley Co., Arkansas, m. 19 Jan. 1947, in AR, Elnora York (dau. of Henry Philip and Sally (Wheeler) York). Levie died 12 May 1988, Detroit Osteopathis Hospital, Detroit, MI. They had:
