The Family Of

Nathaniel JOHNSON and Sarah McCORD

Nathaniel Johnson was born December 25, 1829 in Clinton County, Indiana.  His parents were Daniel and Polly who were both born in Kentucky, but this is all I know about them so far.  Nathaniel was orphaned at age three and raised by John Burns.  He came to Crawford Co, Wisconsin about 1855.

Although records about Nathaniel often spell his name JOHNSON, there are also documents listing him as JOHNSTON.  It is unclear which spelling is “correct.”  It seems that Nathaniel may have preferred Johnson.  His marriage record, death record, obituary, and tombstone spell his name Johnson.  The tradition of Johnston is so strong, however, that Nathaniel’s son David (and David’s descendents) go by Johnston.  David is thought to have been correcting the spelling when he added the “t.”  Family tradition suggests that Nathaniel dropped the “t” as a Union soldier during the Civil War so as to disassociate himself from Johnstons he knew fighting for the Confederacy.

On February 18, 1858 at Marion, Grant Co, WI, Nathaniel Johnson married Sarah Janette McCord.  Sarah was born August 2, 1840 in Pennsylvania.  She was the daughter of Walker and Janette McCord.  (The spelling of Janette is unclear.)  Walker brought his family to Grant Co, WI about 1848 and he remained in the Boscobel area until his death in 1881.

After their marriage, Nathaniel and Sarah Johnson made their home in Clifton Township, Grant Co, WI and by 1860 their first daughter was born.  In the summer of 1861, Nathaniel joined Company H, 7th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry.  During his enlistment, he was taken prisoner by the Confederates twice:  in August 1862 at Bull Run, Virginia and in July 1863 at Gettysburg, Pensylvania.  After recuperating in an Annapolis hospital, he returned to raise his family and live the rest of his life in the Boscobel, Grant Co area.

Though I took great care in my research, you can be sure to find errors ranging from typos to misinterpretations to inaccurate assumptions.  Please forgive me.

In cases where I wasn’t sure about the accuracy of facts, I tried to make the uncertainty clear in my presentation or else left the data out.

I personally researched and verified much of the data you see on this page.  Some of the sources I used were:  vital records, such as marriage and death records; published newspaper accounts of events, including marriage announcements and obituaries; and census records.  Please contact me for source information applying to specific data.

Thank you Richard D Johnston, though just “thank you” isn’t adequate.  You have been a great help in my research, but the real joy has been getting to know you.
