PALMER and HITT
|

Thomas Palmer and Susan Porter Hitt were the parents of Susannah Catherine Palmer, wife of James APPLEBY. Thomas and Susan, and their children, were among the earliest white settlers of Richland County, Wisconsin. Their daughter Sarah married John Coumbe who is considered the first recorded white settler to the area. Their son Loreman served on the County Board of Supervisors and was for a while the county surveyor (trained by his brother-in-law James Appleby). Before coming to Wisconsin, Thomas and Susan settled at times in Kentucky and Missouri, but they were originally from Fauquier County, Virginia. Other researchers have done considerable work on the Palmer and Hitt families in Fauquier County. Susan is descended from Peter Hitt who served in the American Revolution. It seems the Palmers and Hitts were of German descent. Some links to information about the Hitts published by other researchers: Descendents of Peter Hitt by Donna Martinez.
