Born Sally Evans 20 Dec. 1935, Higham Ferrers, Northants, UK. John was born in Salonica Greece where his father held a senior position with the League of Nations Refugee Organisation. After an early childhood in Constantinople and England he returned with his mother and sister to join their father in Australia. John and Elizabeth attended Perth Modern School. John became a surveyor, and then a town planner with the WA Government, before becoming the Melville City Planner. Earlier he had been a Captain in the CMF and a State champion fencer in epee, foil and sabre, as well as the first State President of the Fencing Association. He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal. In planning he was Federal Secretary of the Planning Institute of Australia, a Life Fellow of both the Royal Australian Planning Institute and Planning Institute of Australia, the first holder of the Certificate of Qualification as a Local Government Planner, and one of only three Silver Medallists of the WA Division of RAPI. In 2005 he finished writing “The Kilted Battalion” the history of the 16th Infantry Battalion. John's wife Sally was a senior dental nurse in the University Dental School.
