Joe Treloar felt his "Call" to become a minister so strongly that he started his schooling after he was married. He attended the Old Des Moines Academy and College for eight years to graduate. He was, as his daughter Fern says, "a straight-laced Baptist minister." His parents helped him slightly while in school but most of his living he earned by carrying papers and preaching on Sundays. His loving wife Margaret was his chief helper and it was her constant encouragement that kept him going. In addition to her many other duties she helped him with his lessons and kept the spark of inspiration alive. After graduation both their lives were dedicated to the Baptist Church and the congregations where they lived. Their residences were many as Uncle Joe felt he should move as soon as he had accomplished all he could at one church. These moves were not a hardship to his wife. She remarked, "Think of all the lovely friends I would have missed having if we'd stayed in the same place all the time." After his days of service were over he retired in 1933 to his beloved farm south of Ogden, Iowa where he passed away 28 Feb. 1934.
