Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches

VAN WAGENEN

The following information is taken from my grandmother's book, "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches" (published 1987), with some minor reformatting for the web.  This book is known to contain some errors.  If you have any corrections or additions, please contact me.

First in this country was AART JACOBSEN from Wageninger on the Rhine River, 10 miles west of Arnheim in Gelderland in early 1600's.  He took the name VAN WAGENE from the Town.  Aart married Annetje Gerrits.  Their son Gerrit Aartsen married Clara Pels (baptized 10 September 1651, daughter of Evert and Jannetje (Symons) PELLS).

  1. Their son, Simon Van WAGENEN, baptized 7 April 1689 at Kingston Church, married Mary SCHEPMOES, baptized 1689 (daughter of Johannes Schepmoes).

    1. JOHANNES VAN WAGENE, baptized 18 November 1722, married 24 August 1748 to Elizabeth Burhans (widowed daughter of BARENT BURHANS).
The Van Wagenen family were early settlers in the area in Ulster County near the village of Bloomington / Bloomingdale - called Wahgendal - where there are several old stone houses built by them.     (State Markers)
