Elta was probably named for her mother's sister, Elta Ann (Barringer) Oakley (1875-1924). She loved sewing and similar crafts. She made a lot of baby clothes for me and my cousins when we were little. I remember her making and selling a lot of potholders and Barbie doll clothes. She had an unusual high-pitched voice and a very distinctive giggle - some of my mother's friends knew her as "Aunt Teehee".
Elta aged 7 or 8 years. This was taken at the house on Washington Avenue in Kingston. I'm not sure what she's holding. Grandma remembers that Elta would sometimes fall on the sidewalk when she was little, so their mother would spank the sidewalk for hurting her.
Elta with her mother, Bertha (Barringer) Van Kleeck in 1917. The writing at the bottom that was cropped off reads: "Elta + Mother 1917".
Elta with 2 of her dolls. This may also have been taken circa 1917 as her appearance is very similar to the above photo with her mother. Grandma recalls that this photo was taken in Phoenicia, NY - a yellow house by Woodland Valley Road. "They had several of these china dolls and Elta made clothes for them and they had to leave everything behind (when the family moved). Gordon took this picture and developed it."
Elta dressed as a little girl for the St. Patrick's Day parade in 1925. This was probably taken on Apple Street in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Somebody has attempted to color her outfit green with a crayon.
Two portraits of Elta circa 1930.
