Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches

VAN KEUREN

The following information is taken from my grandmother's book, "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches" (published 1987), with some minor reformatting for the web.  This book is known to contain some errors.  If you have any corrections or additions, please contact me.

MATTYS JANSE VAN KEULEN had on 18 August 1646 a grant of 50 morgens land at Harlem by Director Kieft.  He became a trader, moved to Fort Orange (now Albany) and thence to Esopus where he died prior to 15 February 1663, on which day the deacons loaned 100 guilders from his estate.  His widow married II:  THOMAS CHAMBERS, the Lord of the Manor of Foxhall.

    3. Hendrick, baptized 6 April 1679, married 29 November 1724 to Anneken Schoonmaker
    4. Davit, baptized 24 April 1681
    5. Margreit, baptized 14 January 1684, married 6 March 1704 to BARENT BURHANS
    6. Sara, baptized 8 October 1686, married 1706 to Elias Van Bunschoten
    7. Catheryn, baptized 30 September 1688, married John Crook, Jr.
    8. Maria, baptized 20 April 1692, married 23 October 1729 to Thomas Betty, son of John Beatty and Sussanna Ashfordby
    9. Thomas Jansen, married 22 November 1712 to Mayken Bogaard
    10. Jan who went to England and died there.

  2. Mattys Mattysen, 2nd child of Mattys Janse and Margaret Hendricks.  A Captain in 1685; later serving against the French on the Northern Frontier.  He married Tjatje DeWitt, daughter of Tjerk Claase DeWitt.  All of their children assumed the surname VAN KEUREN.

    10. Cornelius, baptized 3 June 1694, married 29 December 1718 to Kezia Hoogteeling, daughter of William Janse Hoogteling and Aentie Samuels)

    12. Nicholas, married Gerardus

  3. Catrina Mattysen married 3 October 1660 to Jan Jansen, carpenter from Amersforrt, Utrecht.  Their descendents took the surname VAN STEENBURGH.

  4. Anneke Mattysen married 1668 to Sergeant Jan Hendricks.  Their descendants took the surname PERSEN.
