Our Family Tree

by Dorothy Emily Van Kleeck Smith
April 1957

Upon this spreading family tree
Your name you'll find along with me.
This tree has grown both tall and wide
With many branches on all sides.
The various twigs (can't name them all)
Families were large, you may recall.
One thing is sure, each generation
Sure helped increase the population.
If I could name each aunt and cousin,
It would fill pages, many dozen.

I did long search thru many books,
But found no men of fame, nor crooks;
No horse thieves either did I see
Hanging on our family tree.
When great-grandpa went on his way
He owned a place in which to lay
And give his weary bones a home -
He owned a place called "Dead Man's Bones".
He also bought, the books do tell,
Four acres in a place called "Hell".

He did not on the Mayflower stow,
But sailed the sea on the "Spotted Cow".
Another grandpa, from sunny France,
On the "Gilded Otter" took his chance."
As I do check and trace this list
I sure do think and do insist
As over these names my poor tongue twists,
I'm OH SO GLAD - I married a SMITH!
