Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches

OSTERHOUDT / OSTERHOUT / VAN OOSTERHOUDT
ETC.

Members of this family intermarried with my Van Kleeck line (among others).  Most of this information came from my grandmother's book "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches".  It does get very confusing in places as a lot of them married cousins.  I have put names in my direct line in bold letters - don't know whether this will actually help much.  If you would like to make corrections or additions, please feel free to contact me.

The following three paragraphs are copied from "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches":

JAN JANSEN took the name of Van OOSTERHOUDT.  He was from the market of Oosterhout in North Brabrant, Holland.  He came to this country in the early 1660's on the ship "CODDLEBACK".  Jan Jansen was called the Brabranteer; settled in the area known as Brabrant (over the Esopus Creek off what is now Route 28 out of Kingston.  Brabrant Road is still there.)

Later generations dropped the VAN from the name.  He co-owned property with JAN BURHANS in what is now Ulster County - one lot called "Dead Man's Bones" - evidently a burial plot.  It was located about five miles north of Kingston, over the kill (creek) near a footpath leading to Albany.  He also owned a property called "Hell" (don't know where that was located or why called that).

Jan Jansen was married first 25 Oct. 1653 to Annetjen Hendricks and then married second 18 Feb. 1663 in Kingston Dutch Reformed Church to Annejen Jelles.  She was from the Island of Bommelward, Gelderland, Holland.  He was the father of fifteen children.  I will list only several that come into our line.
