Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches

HILL

The following information is taken from my grandmother's book, "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches" (published 1987), with some minor reformatting for the web.  This book is known to contain some errors.  If you have any corrections or additions, please contact me.

My record of this family in this country starts with ANTHONY HILL - came to America from England about 1720 - was a Freeholder at Fox Meadows (now Scarsdale), Westchester County, New York as early as 1726.  He married Mary WARD.  Anthony died at Fox Meadows the winter of 1759/60; his widow moved and lived with her son, William Hill, at Red Mills.  She died there at age 93 years.

Anthony Hill and Mary Ward had the following descendants:

  1. William born 1726, died August 1796 at Red Mills
  2. Uriah died 1765 Westchester County, NY
  3. Anthony died 1766 Cortlands Manor, Westchester County, NY
  4. US Flag  ANDREW HILL born 1727 Fox Meadows, died 1810 at Shokan, Ulster County, New York, married about 1753 Catherine HORTON.
  5. Cornelius
  6. Charity married Isaac Rhoades, Sr. - Scarsdale
  7. Jane
  8. Mary
  9. Miriam born 27 May 1765?, died 1 April 1845, married Elisha Lamoreaux.

Anthony's sons, William and Uriah, moved to lands purchased from Indians.  Will follow on our line:  ANDREW HILL who married Catherine Horton.  She was born 1735 Westchester County, NY; died after September 1774 at Shokan.  Both are buried Shokan Reformed Dutch Churchyard.  Andrew was in the Revolutionary War - commissioned CAPTAIN 2nd Regiment Dutchess County Militia - Rombout Precinct 17 October 1775;  appointed MAJOR of Levies, Dutchess County Militia 1781.  They moved to Dutchess County from Westchester County after 1765 and then 1790 to Marbletown.  From there they moved to Shokan, Ulster County, New York.

Andrew Hill had a grist mill in Shokan (in the) early 1790s.  He donated land and material for the construction of the Reformed Church there.

The children of ANDREW HILL and Catherine Horton:

  1. Billicha born 1753 Fox meadows, Westchester County; died April 1847 Shokan, married James SCHUTT of Fishkill, Dutchess County - A Revolutionary War soldier.  They had 7 children (3 oldest born in Fishkill, 4 younger in Shokan)
