Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches

BLANCHAN
(also BLANCHON, BLANSHAN, etc.)

The following information is taken from my grandmother's book, "Tangled Roots and Twisted Branches" (published 1987), with some minor reformatting for the web.  This book is known to contain some errors.  If you have any corrections or additions, please contact me.

BLANSHAN - MATTYSEN - VAN CUELEN
(goes to our BURHANS and WHITAKER families)

From "Stranger's Church" at Walloon, Canterbury, England:  Mathieu baptized 19 November 1654 son of ANTHOINE BLANCHON and Martine Baets with Godparents:  Mathieu Blanchon and Marie Desopri.  [see Ruth Heidgerd's MATTHEW BLANCHAN]

At the same church, a marriage contract dated 12 April 1649 between Anthoin BLANCHAMP, son of late Leonin, and the late Isabel LeROY, his father and mother, assisted by Mathieu BLANCHAN, his brother.

MATTHEW BLANCHAN, baptized 1654, was born at Noeuville-au-Corne, about thirty miles north of Amiens.  He moved from Armentiers, near the Belgium border, and married MAGDELINE JORISSE / Joire.  They made their way to England with their two daughters:  Catherine and Marie.

  1. Catherine, born about 1935 in Artois, died 1713 in Kingston, Ulster County, NY, married 10 October 1655 to Louis DuBOIS (baptized 1626 Wiscres).  They were married before coming to this country.  For their twelve children, see DU BOIS GENEALOGY.  Catherine married II:  Cottin.

  2. Maria, born 1640 in Armentieres, died 1679, married 1660 to Antoine Crispell.  They had six children.  He married II:  Petronelle DuMond.

  3. Magdalena, baptized 16 May 1647 in Canterbury, married in 1667 to JAN MATTHYS JANSEN of Fort Orange / Albany (son of MATTYS JANS VAN CUELEN). They had ten children (see VAN KEUREN page).

  4. Elizabeth, born about 1651, married in 1668 to Peter Cornelis LOUW.  She married II:  Jan Foockens Heermance.  (Jan Fockens Heermance was (I think) one of the immigrant ancestors of my Hermans / Heermance line on my father's side of the family.  This may make my Mom and Dad very distant cousins. -- RT)

  5. Mathieu, born 18 April 1655, married 1679 to Margrit Claes Van Schoonhoven / Albany.  They had eight children.

MATHEUS BLANCHARD, farmer from Artois, wife and three children (ages 12, 9, and 3 years) were listed as passengers on the ship "De Verguide Otter" ("The GILDED OTTER") which arrived in New Amsterdam (NYC) 26 April 1660.

Also aboard was their daughter Maria and her husband, ANTOIN CRISPELL.

The daughter Catherine and husband LOUIS DuBOIS came in 1661 on the "St. Jan Baptiste".

MATHEUS BLANCHAN's last will mentions his wife Madeline and son Matthew of Hurley, NY to have house, 4 horses and 4 cows.  The rest of the property both in England and America to go to the five children.  Dated 22 August 1671 Kingston.

On 10 June 1663, Hurley / Nieuw Dorp and parts of Kingston were burned by Indians.  Two children and the wife of Antoin Crispell and child were captured by Indians and held captive for 3 months.

Matthys Blanchan's wife was the mid-wife for the women of Wiltwyck (Kingston).
