Unknown Barriger/Barringer Wedding Photo

IDENTIFIED!

(unfortunately not Barringer-related)

Charles S. Duval and Mary A. Cook

Charles S. Duval and Mary A. Cook

These people don't appear to be related to my Barringer line (at least not that I can tell yet), but I'll leave them up here for now until I can find a more appropriate place to put them.  Many thanks to this couple's modern relatives for being so generous with their family information.

A correspondent related to these individuals recognized this photo and writes the following:

The wedding picture is of Charles S. Duval and Mary A. Cook.  The bride is Native American Indian.  The photo comes from the belongings of a close Duvall relative who has since passed away.

Genealogical information was passed from Mary A. Cook to her son Charles Oscar Duvall.  Charles (born as Oscar) Duvall gave this information about his parents to his daughter.

Note:  It was Mary A. Cook herself who told her history.

Part of Story:  Mary A. Cook, 100% Mohawk, was captured as a small child by the Chippewa's and taken to Minnesota.

Note:  Mary A. Cook was taken in and possibly adopted by the Cooks.  (that is IF that is our Mary on the census!)

Note:  English and French families commonly took in orphans.

Native American Indians did not have paper documents as the White people did.  Their family history was passed on orally.  They were very much interested in keeping their genealogical history and accuracy was important.

I also knew Mary A. Cook's son. ... He told me he was Mohawk, Chippewa, and French ...

The photo is of my great-grandparents, Charles S. Duval and Mary A. Cook.  It is not a photo of Jacob Duval and Elizabeth.  (I don't know who Divet is.)

This photo was submitted to me by Ann Ashley Duval (AAshley@chico.com) with a request to put it where people can see it and try to identify the people in it.  Perhaps a relative who has another copy or the original of this photo knows the identities of this couple.  Ann provides the following information:

I descend from Dorotha (Claracy?) Barger/Berger/Barriger b. abt.1816 married 1836 Dundas, Williamsburg, Ontario Canada to Jacob Duval b. abt 1811.  Jacob's parents were born in New York, and he returned there for awhile because half of his children were also born in New York.

Dorotha's parents are Johanannas (John) Barriger/Berger and Mary Strader.
Johanas (sp.?) parents are Walter Berger and Margaret Fero.
Walter's parents are Jacob Berger and Sarah Schneyder.

Anyway, I have been given an unknown family wedding picture.  All of us cousins are trying to figure out who they are.  My guess is this is our Dorthy and Jacob.

She sure looks like a Barriger!

Would it be possible for you to help circulate this for identification? Someone just may have a copy of the same picture, or recognize the couple.

Additional information was provided in a second email:

Two possibilites I have come up with are:

1. Jacob Duval b.abt.1811 Canada & Dorotha (Claracy?) Berger/Barriger/Barger b.abt.1816 Canada. Married March 13, 1836 Williamsburg, Ontario, Canada. Jacob's parents are unknown.

Dorotha was first cousin to RICHARD GORDON BARAGER.
Her parents are JOHANANNAS (JOHN) BARRIGER/BERGER and MARY STRADER.
Johanna's parents are WALTER BERGER & MARGARET FERO.
Walter's parents are JACOB BERGER & SARAH SCHNEYDER.

2. Charles Sydney Duval b.Feb.10,1840 Gouvenuer, St Lawrence Co., New York & Mary Asenath Cook b.June 1850 Pennsylvania. Married Oct. 18, 1868 Rice Co. MN

Charles is the son of Jacob and Dorotha. The picture was found in the possesion of one of Charles and Mary's grandaughters (in Stockton, Calif.)

Charles' siblings:
James Canada
John Canada
Richard Canada
Mary NY
Sarah NY
Samuel NY
Lonesia NY

Mary's parents are ASA B. COOK b.abt.1814 Prus & MARY ASENATH BALL COOK b.abt.1818 Prus.

Mary's siblings were born in Pennsylvania, except the youngest:
Anna Polly Cook
Asa Benjamin Cook
Ezra Noah Cook
Henry Daniel Cook Wisconsin
