Genealogy-related: General
- Ancestry.com Ancestry.com has a search engine and various databases - some of these are free and some are only available to paying members. The extensive message board system has been merged with the one from RootsWeb (also see the RootsWeb listing below) - the message boards are still suffering some growing pains from the big merge, but do offer a lot of information.
They also run the site at Myfamily.com, which offers password-protected free private websites where family members can post current photos, recent (still living) generations of the family tree, post messages with recent family news to share with other family members, etc. - the kind of stuff you'd like to share with aunts, uncles, and cousins, but not with the world at large.
- Cyndi's List - a huge site with links to all kinds of genealogy-related information.
- familysearch.org - The search website belonging to the LDS Church (Mormons).
- RootsWeb - Now affiliated with Ancestry.com (see above), RootsWeb is a very large free genealogy site offering message boards, mailing lists, databases to search, the searchable free WorldConnect family tree, etc. Rootsweb also offers free web hosting with unlimited space, although they do ask that you not upload any file types other than HTML, web graphics, and other web components. RootsWeb Freepages hosting is not limited to genealogy sites - see the RootsWeb Freepages directory for the variety of categories offered. For more information on getting a RootsWeb Freepages site, see the Freepages information page.
- USGenWeb - The USGenWeb Project consists of a group of volunteers working to provide free genealogical resources for all US counties and states. For more information about the project, see the USGenWeb information page.
