Triebel and Related Lines
(Cranson, Fero, Rifenburg/Rifenburgh, etc.)
- William Triebel (1817-1889) came from Germany to the area of Cohoes, New York probably some time in the 1840s (no Triebels of any spelling show up in area censuses before 1850). He married in 1848 to Phebe/Phoebe Ann Cranson (1829-1904) and they had five children. William and Phoebe are buried with some of their children in Waterford Rural Cemetery in Waterford, Saratoga Co., NY. William's sister Susan Triebel married Henry Hess and they had numerous descendants.
Family Bible Records of
Frederick Triebel (1850-1918) and Descendants
- Frederick Triebel (1850-1918) married in 1869 to Bertha Crump (1852-1913). Frederick is listed in 1890 as a millwright in Cohoes, NY. They both died in Canada, where they apparently resided later in life. According to an 1881 Canadian census Frederick and his family lived in Stratford, Ontario. The family must have brought them back to be buried in Waterford Rural Cemetery in Waterford, Saratoga Co., NY. (I do not yet have photos of their graves) Frederick and Bertha had two children that I know of.
- William C. Triebel (born 1870) married in 1884 to Mary L. Denning (1894 - 1948).
- Earl W. Triebel (born and died 1895). Unknown if William and Mary had any other children.
- Lillian Maud Triebel (born 1873) married in 1901 in Montreal, Canada to Irving A. McKelvey, a Methodist Minister. I have a partially deteriorated newspaper clipping about their wedding.
- Irene B. Mckelvey (born 1904). Unknown if Irving and Lillian had any other children or whether Irene had any descendants.
- William Triebel, Jr. (born 1851) married in 1869 to Hannah Waterhouse. William is listed in 1890 as a machinist in Cohoes, NY. They had one son.
- Charles William Triebel married Mary Masterton.
- Edna May Triebel (born 1897) was married and may have had children, but I have no further details yet.
Benjamin Franklin Triebel (1854-1929) married in 1874 to Mary Sutter. She left him not long after their son, William Frederick Triebel (1875-1952), was born and the baby was raised by Benjamin's parents, William and Phebe. Benjamin is buried in Waterford Rural Cemetery with his parents.
Clicking the photos will take you to a page with more information about Benjamin, the four-generation photo, and two newspaper clippings about a fire in his carpenter shop/drafting room.
William Frederick Triebel (1875-1952) and his wife Grace May Fero (1874-1945). They were both from Cohoes, Albany Co., NY and moved with their family to Dutchess County after they married in 1898. My late Uncle Don said he believed Grace was from a large family in Cohoes. Grace and William had four children.
Clicking the photos will bring up a page with additional information and photos for Will and Grace and their children as well as Grace's obituary.
- Grace Adelia Triebel (1899-1911) is buried with her parents in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
William Franklin Triebel (1902-1946) was my grandfather. Click on the photo for a page with more photos of both of my grandparents.
- Florence Lura Triebel (1906-1967) married in 1924 to James Silas Rifenburg (1906-1975). They had three children.
- Ada Viola Triebel (November 1909 - May 1910) is buried with her parents in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
- George Triebel (January 1856 - February 1856) is buried in Waterford Rural Cemetery with his parents.
- Charles Triebel (March 1857 - February 1858) is buried in Waterford Rural Cemetery with his parents.
Benjamin Franklin Triebel worked here and there is evidence that his brother Frederick and father William Triebel also worked here after they moved to Cohoes from Troy. We are not certain what Benjamin's job description was, but it may have had something to do with drafting, mechanics, and/or carpentry (I could swear I've seen him listed somewhere as "chief mechanic for many years"). Benjamin's son William Frederick Triebel started working here at the age of eight years.
- Two postcards of Mill No. 3 and two May 2002 photos of former worker housing.
Triebel's Garage
Photos of Triebel's Garage, founded by
William Frederick Triebel in Red Hook, Dutchess County, NY in the spring of 1917 and operated in its original location until the early 1950s, when the business moved to a larger location south of the village. Triebel's Garage is still in business and still being run by descendants of William Frederick Triebel.

The stones on these graves were replaced, probably sometime in the 1930s. My late Uncle Don was not sure, but believed it was his grandfather (William Frederick Triebel, 1875-1952) who had this done so that the spelling of the family name was corrected from "TRIEBLE" to "TRIEBEL".
