Overview of part of Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY - from a rather blurry snapshot taken in October, 1990. Several people from my Bowman, Hermans/Hermance, and Simmons lines were buried in this cemetery. The ornate metal marker in the center of the photo belongs to William Simmons.
William P. Simmons (ca. 1799 - 1871) married Catharine Clum (ca. 1804 - 1865). Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY. The stone reads as follows:
CATHARINE
HIS WIFE
Died Aug. 15, 1865
Aged 61 Yrs.
(looks as though it could also be "64 Yrs.")
William Simmons (1828 - 1880) married in 1859 to Catharine Ann Hermans (1836 - 1912). Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY. The zinc (or "white bronze") grave marker in the photo belongs to William. I was unable to find a marker for Catharine's grave when I last visited the area in May, 2002. The small white marker with the rust stain on it in the left background of the photo belongs to Catharine's brother William Hermans / Hermance.William's grave marker reads:
(on the back)
HE IS AT REST
Charles Bruce Simmons (1861-1911) married in 1884 to .
Elma Bowman (1862-1943) Clicking Elma's photo will bring up a larger copy of the photo. Clicking her name will take you to my BOWMAN / BOWERMAN page. Clicking on Charles' photo will also bring up a page with a photo of their headstone and obituaries for Charles. Elma collected quite a large number of newspaper clippings, many of which are obituaries of people who lived in and around Pine Plains (not necessarily relatives).
The grocery store in New York City that was run by Charles and Elma Simmons. Photo circa 1885. My father remembers hearing that Elma hated living in the city so much that she threatened divorce if they did not GO HOME to Dutchess County. I have no proof, but believe the two other people in the photo may be Elma's brother Otis Bowman and sister Mary (Bowman) Duncan (see the Bowman page for more information). A 1910 census says Otis was 50, making his birthdate about 1860 - he would have been 25 in 1885. See Otis's section above for a little more information on him. According to my information, Mary was born in 1866 and would have been about 19.
I have obituaries for Charles' mother Catharine (Hermans) Simmons (1836-1912) and for Catharine's father Richard Hermans (1808-1898). Richard's page also has some additional information about his wives and other children.
Historical marker for Milan Christian Church Cemetery in Dutchess County, NY and overview of the "new" section where the Herricks below are buried. There are several Herrick graves on the other side of the large evergreen tree in the left background of the photo.
Photo of the Herrick's house taken about 1900. On the porch, left to right: Charles Herrick, his mother Josephine (Hapeman) Herrick, Charles' father James Herrick, who built the house.
Headstone for Charles and Elma's daughter Mabel Simmons (pictured in the five-generation 1905 Milroy photo and a 1903/4 Bowman family reunion photo along with her son Harold), her husband Charles Herrick, and two of their four children. Charles and Mabel are buried in the Herrick section of Milan Christian Church Cemetery. The inscription is difficult to make out in this photo, but it reads as follows:
MABEL SIMMONS
WIFE
1885 - 1932
HAROLD J. HERRICK SR.
1903 - 1990
GERTRUDE HERRICK MELODY
DAUGHTER
1914 - 1995
"FLORENCE SIMMONS, daughter of Mrs. Elma Simmons, died at her home in the town of Milan last Thursday, aged 31 years. Funeral services were held Sunday and burial took place in the family plot in Evergreen cemetery."
Harrison Simmons (1888-1966) married Della Wright (1886-1979) in 1907. They had a daughter, Myrtle E. (1909-1913) and three sons: Malcolm, Warren, and Roswell. The photo on the left is of Della as a young woman - wish I had one of Harrison from the same time period to go with it. The center photo is of Harrison and Della at the family celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in 1957. The photo on the right is of Malcolm Simmons (left) and Roswell Simmons (right) as small boys.
Dorothy (Simmons) Triebel (1902-1987). This is my grandmother. Click the photo for a page with more photos of both of my grandparents.

Niles Simmons (ca. 1835 - 1876) married Mary Kilmer or Killmer (1837 - 1916). Both are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, NY, along with a son, Frank, who died in childhood (see below). I have a two-line newspaper clipping about Niles' funeral.
