Metal grave marker for Catharine Hermans' (1836 - 1912) husband William Simmons (1828 - 1880) in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess County, NY. I was unable to find a marker for Catharine's grave when I last visited the area in May, 2002.
CATHARINE. A. SIMMONS
Catharine A. Simmons, widow of the late William Simmons and mother of the late Charles B. Simmons, died at the home of the latter in the town of Milan, Jan 2nd, aged 75 years. She was the eldest daughter of the late Richard Hermans, so long a resident of this village (Pine Plains). Her husband died Aug. 7th, 1880. She was a woman of firm convictions, conscientious and kind, a thorough christian, a faithful friend. Funeral services were held in the Methodist church in this village, of which she had been a member since her youth, on Friday at eleven o'clock, conducted by Rev. C. (or is it an O.?) P. McClelland pastor of the church. Burial in Evergreen cemetery in this village.
The departed! the departed! They visit us in dreams And they smile above our memories, Like shadows over streams; But where the cheerful lights of home In constant lustre burn, The departed, the departed Can never more return I sometimes dream their pleasant smiles Still on me sweetly fall; Their tones of love I faintly hear, My name in sadness call. I know that they are happy, With their angel plumage on; But my heart is very desolate To think that they are gone.
DEATH OF MRS. SIMMONS -- Catharine Hermans, wife of the late William Simmons, died at her home in Lafayetteville, Tuesday morning, January 2, 1912, aged 75 years. A peculiar instance of her death is that she died just one week and about the same time in the day after the death of her son, Charles B. Simmons. Deceased had been ill about two weeks from pneumonia, and after the death of Mr. Simmons she failed rapidly, and died as above stated. Mrs. Simmons was the daughter of the late Richard Hermans, of Pine Plains, and her mother was Catharine Rockefeller of the town of Milan. She was a kind and generous woman, a member of the Pine Plains Methodist Church. She is survived by one brother William of Bath, NY, and two half brothers, Willard, of Pawling, and George who lives in the western part of the state. Funeral services will be held Friday morning from her late home at 10 o'clock, and from the Pine Plains Methodist Church at 11 o'clock.
