Great-Grandma's
Collection of Obituary Clippings
My great grandmother, Elma (Bowman) Simmons, clipped obituaries for friends, neighbors, and prominent local citizens as well as relatives, so a lot of these people may not be related to me. I have tried to show the relationship to my family line(s) where and if known. Some obituaries include photographs of the individual and/or the grave stone.
The obituaries of Roy Barton, Isaiah Dibble, and Charles Rudd have scans of the accompanying photos. Unfortunately, only Roy Barton's photo is very clear.
- Barton, Elizabeth (Moore) (1867 - 1943). Elizabeth (Moore) Barton was related to my Bowman line. She was the daughter of Jacob Bowman's (see below) sister Sarah (Bowman) Moore (see below). The obituary names her parents, a deceased son Roy (see below), and a sister (Mrs. Norman Kilmer). Elizabeth is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. This obituary is in a column with two others (James P. Morgan and Mrs. Emeline Thompson).
- Barton, Roy (1889 - 1909). Roy was the son of Elizabeth (Moore) Barton (above). No father is mentioned - he may have died when Roy was young. I have two obituaries for Roy. "This village" is Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. Roy is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Best, Josie (age 16, no dates given). There are two entries in this column. I'm pretty sure this is from Dutchess County, just not sure which "this village" is. There are two poems and a single line that mentions Josie was the grand-daughter of Justus Booth, Esq. I don't know how or if I am related to Josie.
- Bostwick, Bel (Eno) (dates unknown). Bel was the daughter of W. S. Eno. Her husband was William Bostwick. No children are mentioned. An advertisement on the back mentions "Mark Twain's new book: Life on the Mississippi" - I will have to look up when this came out to determine Bel's dates. Location is probably Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY, as Bel was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. I do not know how or if I am related to Bel.
- Bowman, David (1831 - 1910). David Bowman was a brother of my great-great-grandfather, John S. Bowman. David's wife was Lucinda Thorne. Their five children were Rheuanna Rikert, Lina Decker, Rosa Myers, Grace Duncan, and Walter Bowman. David is buried in Stanfordville according to the obituary - I'm not sure which cemetery.
- Bowman, Ida (Van Benschoten) (ca. 1866 - 1924). Ida was the sister-in-law of my great-grandmother, Elma (Bowman) Simmons. Her husband was Otis Bowman. Ida was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Van Benschoten. Otis and Ida had a daughter, Bertha (Bowman) Wirehouse (1890 - 1983) and a son Edward A. Bowman. Ida is probably buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Bowman, Jacob S. (ca. 1843 - 1911). Jacob was a first cousin of my great-great grandfather, John S. Bowman. His wife was Julie Hicks, possibly she died and he remarried because the widow's pension was filed after his death by someone named "Eliza". They had children and grandchildren, but I don't know the names. This is not a terribly informative obituary as it only lists some of the members of his Masonic Lodge who were at the services and some of the flowers that were at the funeral. Jacob is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Bowman, Jane (Milroy) (1842 - 1938). Jane was my great-great grandmother. She was the daughter of Robert Milroy and Mary Carmichael. Jane married John S. Bowman. They had four children: Otis, Elma, Mary, and Louisa (died in childhood). Jane and her husband John are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I have a photo of them and their headstone.
- Brown, John Herman (dates unknown). I am assuming he died sometime in the 1930s as this piece of paper also contains an anecdote about Eleanor Roosevelt. John was the son of Abraham and Margaret (Folger) Brown. His wife was Julia F. Schultz and their daughters were Florence Christina Moore and Lotta Rowe Anthony. There is a little bit of family history in this obituary. I have no idea how or if John is related to me. The obituary states that he died in New Jersey. He may have been buried there.
- Chapman, Florence F. (1870 - 1870). "CHAPMAN. -- In South Boston, on the 8th inst., Florence F., daughter of Charles C. and Christina Chapman, aged 9 months and 2 days." The date of 1870 is from a badly faded partial court summons on the back. I have no idea how or if the Chapman family is related to me.
- Cooper, Frances (maiden name unknown) (dates unknown). Only her husband, Peter Cooper, is mentioned. There is no location mentioned, but there is a partial ad on the back that mentions Catskill-on-Hudson, NY -- Frances may have been from that area. I have no idea if or how Frances is related to me.
- Clum, Eliza (maiden name not stated) (1850-1909). "CLUM -- In this village Dec. 6th, Eliza, wife of Reuben Clum, aged 59 years." This listing appears at the end of one of the long obituaries for Roy Barton (see above), which is where I get the death year of 1909 and infer that "this village" is probably Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. There was a Clum who married into my Simmons line, but I do not know how or if I am related to Eliza.
- Dibble, Isaiah (ca. 1829 - 1909). There is no name of the newspaper on this clipping, but a partial date on the back appears to say Friday, April 16, 1909. This is a long obituary written by Dutchess County historian and genealogist Isaac Huntting. It contains quite a bit of genealogical data. Isaiah was the son of Gustavus and Gertrude (Winans) Dibble. His first wife was Eunice Thompson. They had three children, two of whom (William and Gustavus) outlived them. Isaiah's second wife was Emily Mygatt. I am not sure whether Isaiah is related to me. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Duncan, Mary (Bowman) (1866 - 1947), widow of Isaac Duncan. Mary was one of my grandmother's aunts. This obituary was contributed by a correspondent.
- Golden, infant daughter (1912 - 1913). "GOLDEN - In the town of Milan, April 5, 1913, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Golden, aged 1 year and 6 months." I have no idea how or if the Golden family is related to me.
- Hare, Reverend George S. (1824 - 1888). I am assuming that the year of George's death and the year this paper was published was 1888 because the court notices on the back of the clipping are all dated various months in 1888. The court appearance dates were all for 1889. The obituary mentions George's parents, but doesn't name them. His wife was "Miss Sarah Jane Crawford, daughter of the Rev. John Crawford". The obituary mentions a surviving daughter, but doesn't name her either. I have no idea how or if George is related to me. Elma may have kept this clipping simply because he was the minister to a congregation she attended.
- Hermans, Charles Henry (1843 - 1905). Charles was the brother of my great great grandmother Catharine A. (Hermans) Simmons below. He had been in the Civil War (First NY Mounted Rifles, I think). This clipping is not an obituary, but rather an account of a hit-and-run automobile accident in which Charles was the victim. His widow filed a pension application a week or two after the accident, so Charles probably died of his injuries. Charles lived in New York City and may have been buried there.
- Hermans, Reverend Edwin J. (1832 - 1896). Edwin Hermans was a Methodist minister from Potter, NY, which I believe is in Yates County. This is a fairly long obituary and gives a lot of good information. It was written by one M. P. Blakeslee, who was probably a fellow churchman. Edwin was the son of James Hermans, M. D., and married Adelia S. Wyman. They had three daughters, Cary, Mary, and Hattie. Edwin's second wife was Mrs. Charlotte S. Voorhees, a sister of his first wife. This is quite a long personal and career history. From correspondence sent by someone researching the Hermans line, Edwin appears to have been the nephew of my great-great-great grandfather, Richard Hermans (Edwin's father, James Hermans, was apparently Richard's brother). Edwin is buried in "Nettle Valley Cemetery", probably somewhere around Yates County where he was born and died.
- Hermans, Mary (Stark) (dates unknown). Mary was the wife of Willard Shear Hermans (half-brother of Catharine (Hermans) Simmons - my great-great grandmother). The obituary only mentions two children, both of whom predeceased Mary. Mary was buried in "the Dover Plains cemetery" - probably located in Dutchess Co., NY.
- Hermans, Richard (1808 - 1898). Richard Hermans was my great-great-great grandfather. His first wife (from whom I am descended) was Catharine Rockefeller (1810 - 1846). After Catharine died, Richard married her half sister, Emeline Shear (1820 - 1857). Each marriage produced five children. Richard's third wife was Sarah Miller (1816 - 1887, see below), the widow of George Bunnell. Richard and most of his family are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I have photos of most of their stones.
- Hermans, Sarah (Miller) Bunnell (1816 - 1887). Sarah was the widow of George Bunnell and the third wife of Richard Hermans (1808 - 1898, see above). Her father was James Miller. I have two obituaries for her. I believe that Sarah is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Herrick, Ethel (1894 - 1904). This is a poem apparently written by her family's minister. Ethel was evidently only ten years old. My grandmother's sister married into the Herrick family, but I'm not sure who Ethel was. UPDATE - according to a stone we saw in Milan Christian Church cemetery while visiting in May 2002, Ethel was probably the daughter of Thaddeus J. Herrick (1869 - 1922) and his wife Bertha Dedrick (1873 - 1927). My aunt took a photo while we were there and I have included it with the clipping. I still don't know where Ethel and her parents fit into the family tree.
- Hicks, Edith (1872 - 1889). This is a poem, not an obituary. Edith lived in Milan, Dutchess County. She may have been related to the Hicks family that married into my Bowman line.
- Hoffman, Mary Amanda (Strever) (1836 - 1902). "This village" was probably somewhere in Dutchess County, probably Pine Plains as Mary was buried in Evergreen Cemetery and there is part of a Dutchess County train schedule on the back of this clipping. I have no idea whether I'm related to the Strever or Hoffman families. Mary is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Husted, James and Mary, children of Eben Husted. This is a very short, badly deteriorated obituary for two very small children: James Husted, aged about 2 years, and his sister Mary, whose age I can't make out. This family was apparently from somewhere around Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY where they are buried. I have no idea how or if they are related to me. UPDATE - James's dates are January, 1866 - March, 1868 and Mary's are April, 1861 - March, 1868 according to a photo of the family's grave marker sent to me by a correspondent. I have included the photo with the obituaries by permission of the contributor.
- Husted, Libbie (age 15, no dates given). Libbie's parents were W.W. and Nancy Husted. A brother and sister are mentioned but not named. I have no idea how or if the Husted family is related to me. UPDATE - Libbie's dates are ca. 1855 - 1870 according to a photo of her grave marker sent to me by a correspondent. I have included the photo with the obituary by permission of the contributor. Libbie and her family are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Johnson, Frederick (age 2, no dates given). Frederick's parents are listed as "Dr. and Mrs. George Q. Johnson. I have no idea how or if I am related to this Johnson family. Frederick is buried in the family plot "in Hillsdale".
- Johnson, Gladys C. (age 13, no dates given). Gladys appears to have been the sister of little Frederick listed above as her parents are listed as "Dr. and Mrs. G. Q. Johnson". Gladys is mentioned as "the youngest daughter" in the family, but no other siblings are actually named. I have no idea how or if I am related to this Johnson family. Gladys is also buried in the family plot "in Hillsdale".
- Ketcham, Reverend William Ezra (1837 - 1903). This is a long detailed obituary about Reverend Ketcham's life and church career. His wife was Selina Bowers. The obituary mentions two deceased children "in the family plot at Cold Spring," and names two surviving children: Wilbur B. Ketcham (see below) and Martha E. Ketcham. I have no idea how or if William is related to me. Elma may have kept this clipping simply because he was the minister to a congregation she attended. William died in Yonkers, NY, but the location of his grave is not mentioned.
- Ketcham, Wilbur B. (1863 - 1903). Wilbur was the son of Reverand William Ezra Ketcham listed above. A widow and three children are mentioned, but not named. I have no idea how or if I am related to the Ketcham family. Wilbur also died in Yonkers, NY. Burial location is not mentioned.
- Luqueer, Margaret P. (Harris) (1823 - 1896). This clipping is mostly about Margaret's character and religion. It mentions no relatives, although I did find her listed in Poucher as "w. of John A.". I have no idea how or if Margaret is related to me. Margaret is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Martin, Minnie (Wieghmann) (1874 - 1933) Minnie was the mother-in-law of Edward A. Bowman, son of Otis Bowman and Ida Van Benschoten (see above). Otis was the brother of my great-grandmother, Elma (Bowman) Simmons. Minnie was married to Charles E. Martin. According to the obituary, her survivors included nine daughters, six sons, and twenty grandchildren. "Interment was in the Lutheran Stone church cemetery" (Saint Peter the Apostle Lutheran Church Cemetery) in Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Milroy, Mary (Carmichael) (1818 - 1909). Mary was my great-great-great grandmother. She was born in Scotland and came to the United States in 1835 at the age of 17. This obituary has has a lot of information in it. Mary and her husband Robert Milroy are buried in Rhinebeck Association Cemetery, Rhinebeck, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Moore, Sarah (Bowman) (1823 - 1906). Sarah was a first cousin of my great-great grandfather, John S. Bowman. Jacob S. Bowman was her brother. Her parents were Otis E. and Sarah (Hicks) Bowman. She married Otis Moore and they had one son and five daughters. Sarah is probably buried in Milan or Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Morgan, James P. (1846 - 1910). James was the son of Charles and Maria (Tripp) Morgan and the nephew of George Morgan, former mayor of Poughkeepsie and New York State Senator. He apparently lived in Pine Plains and was also buried there. I do not know how or if James is related to me. James is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Potts, Peter Francis (1836 - 1910). Peter was director and vice president of a local bank somewhere in Dutchess County (Upper Red Hook?). He was also an officer of St. John's Reformed Church. The only relative mentioned is Peter's "little grandson, Francis Potts Budd", who died three weeks before Peter. I have no idea how or if I am related to Peter. Peter appears to have been buried in the cemetery of St. John's Reformed Church in Red Hook, Dutchess Co., NY.
- Reynolds, Julia (1803 - 1870). "REYNOLDS. -- In this village, on the 22nd inst., Miss Julia Reynolds aged 67 years." "This village" probably refers to Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY from a badly faded partial court summons on the back of the clipping. Death date of 1870 is also from this court summons. I have no idea how or if I am related to Julia.
- Rikert, Emory (age 50, no dates given). Emory was from Stanfordville in Dutchess County and died suddenly in a sanitarium in Kingston. This is not so much an obituary as a newspaper article about the mysterious circumstances of his death. Survivors are listed as an un-named wife, a daughter "Miss Florence Rikert", and a brother "Farley Rikert of Schultzville". I have no idea how or if I am related to the Rikert family.
- Rowe, Caroline (Hoysradt) (1829 - ????). Two clippings, probably from two different newspapers. No names of newspapers or dates of death or publication in either clipping. Caroline Hoysradt was the wife of Johne Rowe of Pine Plains (married November 3, 1869). No burial location is mentioned, but it might be Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I have no idea how or if Caroline is related to me.
- Rudd, Charles (1820 - 1910). This is another very long obituary written by Dutchess County historian and genealogist Isaac Huntting and contains quite a bit of both Charles Rudd's genealogy and the history of the northern part of Dutchess County. Charles lived in Pine Plains for several years and then moved to Gallatin Township in Columbia County, where he was living at the time of his death. His parents were Reuben B. and Elizabeth (Smith) Rudd and his wife was Frances Falk. The obituary also names three sons (John, Harry, Charles) and two daughters (Mrs. Frank Eno, Mrs. Elisha Sherman). Charles died at his home in Gallatin, Columbia County, NY and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I have no idea how or if the Rudd family is related to me. A correspondent sent some photos and info on Mr. Rudd's son-in-law Frank Eno and his family, which I have put here until I can get around to making them their own page.
- Rudd, Tamma (ca. 1861 - 1887). Tamma was a daughter of Charles Rudd above. She died at the home of her sister, Mary (Rudd) Armstrong in Missoula, Montana. Tamma was buried in Missoula, Montana. I have no idea how or if the Rudd family is related to me.
- Sackett, Hiram (1844 - 1909). "SACKETT -- In this town Dec. 7th, Hiram Sackett, aged 65 years." This listing appears at the end of one of the long obituaries for Roy Barton (see above), which is where I get the death year of 1909 and infer that "this town" is probably Milan, Dutchess Co., NY. I do not know how or if I am related to Hiram.
- Schultz, Louisa (maiden name unknown) (18?? - 1904). Mostly about her character, this obituary mentions daughters but does not name them. No husband is mentioned - she is referred to as "Mrs. Schultz", so she may have outlived him. No burial location is mentioned either. I do not know how or if I am related to Louisa.
- Scutt, John (age 16, no dates given). I'm pretty sure this is from Dutchess County, just not sure which "this village" is. Unfortunately, no relatives are mentioned. John died "at Millerton". No burial location is mentioned. I don't know how or if I am related to John.
- Simmons, Catharine A. (Hermans) (1836-1912). Catharine was the wife of William Simmons (1828 - 1880). They were my great-great-grandparents and were buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I have a photo of their grave marker.
- Simmons, Charles Bruce (1861 - 1911). Charles was the son of William and Catharine (Hermans) Simmons above. His wife was Elma Bowman, who made all these clippings. He was my great-grandfather. Charles is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY along with his wife and one of their daughters (Florence, see below). I have photos of Charles and his grave stone.
- Simmons, Florence (1886-1918). Florence was the daughter of Charles Bruce Simmons above and the sister of my grandmother, Dorothy (Simmons) Triebel (1902 - 1987). "FLORENCE SIMMONS, daughter of Mrs. Elma Simmons, died at her home in the town of Milan last Thursday, aged 31 years. Funeral services were held Sunday and burial took place in the family plot in Evergreen cemetery." Florence is buried with her parents and her grave is marked by the same stone.
- Simmons, Martin (1840 - 1888). Martin evidently lived in Pine Plains. The obituary mentions a surviving wife and seven children, but gives no names of relatives. According to their stone, his wife was Ellen Fitzgerald (1850 - 1890). Martin and Ellen are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. They may relate to my Simmons line, but I have no idea how or where yet. UPDATE - I now have a photo of the headstone of Martin and his wife Ellen, but still don't know how they fit into my family tree.
- Simmons, Niles (1835 - 1876) Only two lines - not terribly informative. "This village" is probably Pine Plains. From stones I found in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, his wife was Mary Killmer (1837 - 1916) and they had at least one child, Frank, who died in childhood in 1875 (I was unable to make out what Frank's age was to determine a birthdate). UPDATE - I now have a photo of the headstones of Niles and his wife Mary and their son Frank who died in childhood. I believe that Niles was a brother of my great great grandfather William Simmons.
- Simmons, Myrtle (1909 - 1913). Myrtle was the daughter of my grandmother's brother Harrison Simmons (1888 - 1966) and his wife Della Wright (1886 - 1979). Myrtle was buried "in the Christian Church cemetery at Stanfordville".
- Simmons, Sara (Parker) (ca. 1846 - 1933). A short obituary. Sara was the widow of Isaac Simmons. Their son, Parker Simmons, and grandson, Earl Simmons, predeceased her. Sara was buried "in Pine Plains", probably in Evergreen Cemetery. Sara's husband Isaac may relate to my Simmons line, but I have no idea how or where yet. UPDATE - I now believe that Sara's husband Isaac Simmons was a brother of my great great grandfather, William Simmons.
- Smith, Walter A. (1861 - 1896). "SMITH. - In this village, August 4th, Walter A. Smith, aged 35 years."
- Smith, Blanche (1888 - 1896). "SMITH. - In this village, July 31, Blanche, daughter of Walter and Anna Smith, aged 8 years." Probably the daughter of Walter A. Smith above. I have no idea if or how I am related to this Smith family.
- Thompson, Emeline (maiden name not given) (1837 - 1910). There's not a lot of information with this one. Emeline had a sister and three daughters. No other relatives are mentioned. Emeline was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. I do not know how or if I am related to Emeline.
- Walsworth, Reverend Lyman Wesley (1821 - 1888). Lyman was born in Rodman, Jefferson County, NY and died in Boscobel, NY. He married Anna Elvira Bloom and they had eight children: four sons, two daughters, and two children who died in infancy. This is quite a long personal and career history. I have no idea how or if Lyman is related to me. Elma may have kept this clipping simply because he was the minister to a congregation she attended.
- Wilbur, Mary (dates unknown). There is no information on family here, just a long discourse on her religious character. No burial location is mentioned. I have no idea if or how I am related to Mary.
