Overview of part of the old section of Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY - from a snapshot taken in October, 1990. Several people from my Bowman, Hermans/Hermance, and Simmons lines were buried in this cemetery.
There is an excellent website devoted to research on this Bowerman / Bowman line at The Descendants of Thomas and Hannah (Annable) Bowerman.
I have also found very helpful an online excerpt from History of Little Nine Partners of Northeast Precinct and Pine Plains, New York, Duchess County published in 1897 by Dutchess County historian and genealogist Isaac Huntting.

The Yeomans cemetery has two listings online that I know of, both at USGenWeb's Dutchess County site: Dr. Poucher's survey made in 1914, and a more recent survey done by Garry and Judi Wilkinson. Several of the earlier members of this Bowman / Bowerman line to live in Dutchess County are buried here. The section of the cemetery where the Bowmans are buried is in deep shade and I have lightened this photo with the computer to make it clearer. I have a page in my cemetery photo section showing some of the other graves in Yeomans Cemetery.
I found an entry for a "Joseph Bowerman" in an online transcription of Poucher's survey of Friends' Ground in Arthursburg, Dutchess Co., NY. This person is listed as having died May 21, 1867 at the age of 66 years, 1 month, and 17 days. No idea yet who this guy is or how he may connect onto this tree. The dates are awfully close to those of my ggg grandfather Joseph A. Bowman below, buried in Yeomans Ground in Milan Township. He may be the Joseph Bowerman who was the son of Thomas Bowerman and Maturah Bull, which would make him a distant cousin of my ggg grandfather listed below.
Maltiah / Melatiah Bowerman (ca. 1765 - 1827) married Rhoba / Rhoda / Reba Arnold (ca. 1777 - 1871). Rhoba is buried in Yeomans Cemetery in Milan Township along with her son Joseph. I do not know where Melatiah is buried - possibly he is in the same cemetery, but his stone had disappeared by the time Dr. Poucher made his survey. The Bowerman / Bowman website mentioned above notes that Meletiah died intestate in Milan Township, so I am assuming he was buried in the area somewhere. The only words I could make out clearly on Rhoba's stone was her name RHOBA near the top (both cemetery surveys say "RHODA", but that letter looks more like a "B" than a "D" to me) and "aged" near the bottom of the inscription. The rest of it was too badly blurred and eroded for me to be able to read. Poucher gives the inscription as "Bowman, Rhoda, w. of Maltia, d. 1871, Sep. 8, a. 94 y". The 1860 Federal census for Milan Township shows Rhoba living with her grandson Albert and his family.
Annual family reunions of the descendants of Maltiah/Meletiah and Rhoba (Arnold) Bowerman were held in the 1930s and 1940s. I have clippings and photos from some of these, which were generously contributed by a relative.
Joseph A. Bowman (1799-1867) married in 1818 to Maria Badgley (ca. 1800-1875). They had eight children and are buried in Yeoman Cemetery.Joseph's stone is broken into two pieces. It reads:
& 19 D's
I assume the rest of Joseph's age at death has been broken off or is below ground on the broken-off top part (I didn't try to move the pieces around to find out). Poucher listed the age at death as 67 years, 5 months, 19 days, making Joseph's birth year approximately 1799 or 1800. Maria's stone reads:

Albert Bowman (1820-1899) married Louisa (per headstone) or Frances (per family obituaries) Story (ca. 1836-1864).Albert's stone is clearly legible. The cable guardrail along the edge of the Taconic Parkway can be seen in the background. Louisa's stone is eroded and blurred to the point where it is barely legible. I was just able to make out LOUISA / wife of / Albert Bowman - could not read the rest of the inscription on her stone. Poucher gives the inscription on her stone as "Bowman, Louisa, w. of Albert, & dau, of Wilbur & Eighmie Story, d. 1864, Mar. 31. a. 28 y. 27 d."
The 1870 census lists them with three children:
Horace Bowman (1861 - 1941). Family reunion clippings mention a "Mrs. Horace Bowman". She is listed in the 1900 census as "Margaret M.". UPDATE: The family grave stone lists names and dates (but not relationships) for Horace, his sister Alice (see above), Margaret Ten Eyck (1866 - 1946, Horace's wife), and somebody named "Keith Bowman" with just one year of 1921 listed. This stone is located in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York. Photos of the Horace Bowman grave stone generously contributed by a correspondent. I also have an obituary for Horace Bowman. After Louisa died, Albert married Helen Near (ca. 1837 - 1925) and had a son. Helen had previously been briefly married to George W. Fraleigh and had a son Philip with him. I have an obituary for Helen Near Fraleigh Bowman. According to her obituary, Helen is buried somewhere in Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York.
Albert and Louisa are buried in Yeoman Cemetery.
John S. Bowman (1826 - 1906) and his wife Jane Milroy (1842-1938). These are my great great grandparents. John is listed in the 1850 census as "Daguerrotype Taker". I have seen him listed in some records as "John F. Bowman". Clicking the photo will bring up a page with their headstone (in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains) and Jane's obituaries. The photo of John Bowman in his later years was generously contributed by another descendant. Jane appears as an older woman in the five-generation photo in the Milroy section and also in the Bowman family reunion photo above.
- John Bowman farmhouse in Milan Township, Dutchess County, New York. From left to right: unidentified child (Otis' daughter Bertha?), Ida (Van Benschoten) Bowman, Jane (Milroy) Bowman, John Bowman, Otis Bowman (with horse)
- John Bowman's farm. Left to right: John Bowman, Otis Bowman, unidentified child (probably Otis' son Edward), unidentified man with horse.

Jane (Milroy) Bowman's parents and siblings have their own page in the Milroy section.
Otis Bowman (1860 - 1944), brother of Elma (Bowman) Simmons below, and his wife Ida Van Benschoten (1866 - 1924). The first photo shown here was generously contributed by another relative. The second photo is incorrectly labeled "Otis Bowman and Ada Hyde (Milroy)". It is easy to imagine the person that wrote the label as mis-remembering the name "Ida" as "Ada" and wrongly concluding that the woman in the photo must be Ada (Hyde) Milroy. (Ada was the second wife of William Milroy - see the Milroy section above). I have an obituary for Ida (Van Benschoten) Bowman. Otis and Ida's inscriptions are on the back of the same stone used by Otis' parents John S. and Jane (Milroy) Bowman in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, NY.
In the 1930 census, Otis' household is listed as including his son Edward, his daughter Esther, his widowed sister Mary Duncan, and his widowed mother Jane. Esther is probably actually Otis' daughter-in-law, the wife of his son Edward (see below).
Otis and Ida's son Edward and daughter Bertha as young children. This photo was generously contributed by a relative. I find it interesting that Edward's face remained almost exactly the same from the time he was a small child to when he was an old man. It makes it very easy to identify him in family photos.
Edward A. Bowman (born ca. 1887) married Esther Martin. They had two sons, at least one of whom is still living. I have an obituary for Edward's mother-in-law, Minnie (Wieghmann) Martin (1874-1933), which only mentions first names for her six sons and three unmarried daughters (out of a total of 9 daughters and a grand total of FIFTEEN surviving adult children!)
Bertha Bowman (1890-1983) and her husband Fernando Wirehouse (1886-1944). Bertha and Fernando are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY. There is another nearly identical stone behind this one (just visible in the back of the photo on the right) for a Jacob Wirehouse and his wife Kittie Lasher - possibly Fernando's brother and his wife? I don't think Bertha and Fernando ever had any children. I visited the site of their farm when I visited New York in 2002 - beautiful piece of land up in the hills, but it was overgrown and starting to decay. I think I have some photos around here somewhere - will have to dig for them. I was told that the property was stuck in probate because there were no heirs. I seem to remember coming across information that there was an old Wirehouse family cemetery in the area somewhere, but we didn't find it on that trip. I have an obituary for Bertha.
Elma Bowman (1862-1943) married in 1884 to
Charles Bruce Simmons (1861-1911). These are my great grandparents. Clicking Elma's photo will bring up a larger copy of the photo. Elma is also present in the five generation Milroy photograph with her grandmother, mother, daughter, and grandson. Clicking on Charles' photo will also bring up a page with a photo of their headstone and obituaries for Charles. Elma collected quite a large number of newspaper clippings, many of which are obituaries of people who lived in and around Pine Plains (not necessarily relatives). For more information on Charles and Elma and their descendants, see the Simmons section.
Mary Bowman (1866 - 1947) married Isaac Duncan (1865 - 1925). The 1930 census gives her age as sixty-something, but I can't make out the second digit. The census also gives her age at marriage as 21. Mary was known as "Aunt Mait." The photo on the right shows Aunt Mait (on the left) with her sister Elma (Bowman) Simmons (1862 - 1943, see above) listening to the radio in the Triebel family's apartment upstairs in the old Triebel's Garage building in Red Hook, NY. This is the only photo my family has which shows Aunt Mait. The portraits of Mary and Isaac Duncan in their youth were generously contributed by another relative.Mary and Isaac are buried in Nine Partners Cemetery in Millbrook, Dutchess County, NY. A correspondent has generously submitted Mary's obituary.
Louisa Bowman (ca. 1870 - 1873). Louisa is buried in "Yeoman's Ground" in Milan Township, Dutchess County, New York. One of the obituaries of Louisa's mother Jane (Milroy) Bowman has this information wrong - says Louisa "...died in infancy in 1868." Louisa's stone reads as follows:
David Bowman (1831-1910) married Lucinda Thorn or Thorne (1834-1920). They had at least six children. I have David's obituary, which helpfully mentions ALL his children that survived to adulthood whether living or dead. I wish I had obituaries like that for more of my relatives.David and Lucinda and several of their family are buried in Stanfordville Cemetery. The family stone reads as follows:
LUCINDA THORN, his wife
FEB. 14, 1834 - JAN. 20, 1920
RHEUMMA M. BOWMAN - RIKERT
NOV. 2 1855 - NOV. 21, 1875
GRACE M. BOWMAN - DUNCAN
JUNE 30, 1868 - SEPT. 7, 1904
Rheuanna/Reuamy/Rheumma Bowman (1855 - 1875) married George Rikert.
Lina J. Bowman (1862 - 1953) married Myron H. Decker (1852 - 1939). Lina and Myron are buried in Stanfordville along with what appear to be Myron's parents. The family stone reads as follows:
|
ABRAM DECKER FEB. 17, 1822 APRIL 8, 1900 |
MYRON H. DECKER DEC. 16, 1852 JAN. 19, 1939 |
|
ANGELINE HAM his wife SEPT. 14, 1826 NOV. 15, 1892 |
LINA J. BOWMAN his wife NOV. 5, 1862 MAR. 18, 1953 |
Angeline/Angelene "Angie" Decker (born ca. 1887), married a Mr. Houston.
Leona A. Decker (born ca. 1891), married a Mr. Bradley. The Bowman family reunion clippings mention a Mrs. Sterling Bradley and a Mrs. Donald Bradley - not sure which one is Leona. A clipping dated August 14, 1952 mentions "Mrs. Leona Bradley" in attendance at a meeting of the Stanford Cemetery association.
Rose Anna Bowman (1865 - 1944) married John Rogers Myers (1848 - 1923) in 1894. They are buried in Stanfordville and their family stone reads as follows:
ROSA A. BOWMAN
HIS WIFE
1865 - 1944
LYDIA C. MYERS
1814 - 1892
ALMA C. MYERS
1852 - 1890
GUY C.
1895 - 1895
This photo is identified only as "John Myers' sister". This may be the Alma C. Myers (1852 - 1890) listed on the gravestone above.
Walter D. Bowman (1867 - 1932) married Jennie M. Duncan (1869 - 1952). Both are buried in Nine Partners Cemetery. The stone reads:
JENNIE M. DUNCAN
HIS WIFE
APRIL 20, 1869 - AUGUST 8, 1952
ISAAC E. BOWMAN
JANUARY 15, 1887 - NOVEMBER 20, 1959

Jennie (Duncan) Bowman with sons David and Isaac.
Isaac E. Bowman (1887 - 1959)
David W. Bowman (1888 - 1971) married Jessie M. Dean (1890 - 1994). Both are buried in Nine Partners Cemetery. The stone reads:
JESSIE M. DEAN
HIS WIFE
APRIL 29, 1890 - NOVEMBER 29, 1994
This photo is labeled only "Mr. and Mrs. Bowman, Jess and Dave". I believe the people in it are (left to right), Jessie (Dean) Bowman, her husband David W. Bowman, David's mother Jennie (Duncan) Bowman, David's father Walter D. Bowman. Love the outfits!
Grace Bowman (1868 - 1904) married George R. Duncan (1863 - 1930). The following info according to a relative: "George and Grace were married July 10, 1886. After she died he married Myra Priscilla Case (1873 - 1925) in 1911. He and Grace had two kids, Elsie D.(1889-1977) and Stanley Thorne Duncan (1887-1948)." George and Grace and Myra are all buried in Nine Partners Cemetery. The Duncan stone reads:
GEORGE R.
1863 - 1930
HIS WIFE
MYRA CASE
1873 - 1925
(Grace is buried in her parents' plot - see the stone for David and Lucinda (Thorne) Bowman above)
Stanley Thorne Duncan (1887 - 1948)
Elsie D. Duncan (1889 - 1977) married Harry C. Creamer (died 1972). Elsie's obituary does not mention any surviving children.
Clarissa Bowman (1836 - 1907) married Mortimer C. Northrup (dates unknown). They had at least one daughter whose name I don't know. Clarissa is buried in "Yeoman's Ground". I increased the contrast on this photo of her stone slightly to make it a bit easier to read. Mortimer may be there also, but I did not see a stone for him. Clarissa's stone reads:

Elizabeth "Lizzie" Moore (1866 - 1910) married Fred Barton in 1883. This is the same Fred Barton who later married Nina Porter, the daughter of Elizabeth's sister Josephine (see above). I have an obituary for Elizabeth. Lizzie is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.
Anthony Barton. I have no dates for this individual and he is not listed in the 1900 census. UPDATE: In a photo of this family's plot, there is a stone for "Lee A. Barton", born and died 1887. Possibly the same person? Lee A. Barton is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.
Roy Barton (1889-1909). I have two long obituaries for Roy. Roy is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.
Bowman, Martha H. Seeley, wife of Pulaski, born 1842, died 1904.
Bowman, Pulaski, 1st Lieut. (Co. F. 150th Regt. N.Y.V.) born 1836, died 1901.
UPDATE: A relative found Sands' stone in Stanfordville Cemetery. I guess Dr. Poucher misremembered the location of the grave in his survey. According to this photo, Sands had a wife named Sarah (ca. 1811 - 1868). Another researcher says her maiden name was Green. I tried to enhance the contrast on the stone to make it easier to read. The inscription appears to read as follows:
SARAH
wife of
Sands Bowman
Died Mar 15, 1868
Aged 56 yrs, 3 mos
& 6 ds
Info on Sands' descendants from another researcher and from the 1880 US Census for Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York:
John had one son with his first wife Ann Eliza Tripp:
and three sons with his second wife Catherine Fowler:
