Bowman / Bowerman and related lines

Evergreen Cemetery

Overview of part of the old section of Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY - from a snapshot taken in October, 1990.  Several people from my Bowman, Hermans/Hermance, and Simmons lines were buried in this cemetery.

Many thanks to the Bowman descendants of Stanfordville, NY for generously sharing so many of their wonderful family photos.

There is an excellent website devoted to research on this Bowerman / Bowman line at The Descendants of Thomas and Hannah (Annable) Bowerman.

I have also found very helpful an online excerpt from History of Little Nine Partners of Northeast Precinct and Pine Plains, New York, Duchess County published in 1897 by Dutchess County historian and genealogist Isaac Huntting.

Bowman graves in Yeoman Cemetery
Bowman graves in Yeomans Cemetery

The Yeomans cemetery has two listings online that I know of, both at USGenWeb's Dutchess County site:  Dr. Poucher's survey made in 1914, and a more recent survey done by Garry and Judi Wilkinson.  Several of the earlier members of this Bowman / Bowerman line to live in Dutchess County are buried here.  The section of the cemetery where the Bowmans are buried is in deep shade and I have lightened this photo with the computer to make it clearer.  I have a page in my cemetery photo section showing some of the other graves in Yeomans Cemetery.

I found an entry for a "Joseph Bowerman" in an online transcription of Poucher's survey of Friends' Ground in Arthursburg, Dutchess Co., NY.  This person is listed as having died May 21, 1867 at the age of 66 years, 1 month, and 17 days.  No idea yet who this guy is or how he may connect onto this tree.  The dates are awfully close to those of my ggg grandfather Joseph A. Bowman below, buried in Yeomans Ground in Milan Township.  He may be the Joseph Bowerman who was the son of Thomas Bowerman and Maturah Bull, which would make him a distant cousin of my ggg grandfather listed below.

  1. Rhoba Arnold Bowerman headstone  Maltiah / Melatiah Bowerman (ca. 1765 - 1827) married Rhoba / Rhoda / Reba Arnold (ca. 1777 - 1871).  Rhoba is buried in Yeomans Cemetery in Milan Township along with her son Joseph.  I do not know where Melatiah is buried - possibly he is in the same cemetery, but his stone had disappeared by the time Dr. Poucher made his survey.  The Bowerman / Bowman website mentioned above notes that Meletiah died intestate in Milan Township, so I am assuming he was buried in the area somewhere.

The only words I could make out clearly on Rhoba's stone was her name RHOBA near the top (both cemetery surveys say "RHODA", but that letter looks more like a "B" than a "D" to me) and "aged" near the bottom of the inscription.  The rest of it was too badly blurred and eroded for me to be able to read.  Poucher gives the inscription as "Bowman, Rhoda, w. of Maltia, d. 1871, Sep. 8, a. 94 y".  The 1860 Federal census for Milan Township shows Rhoba living with her grandson Albert and his family.

Annual family reunions of the descendants of Maltiah/Meletiah and Rhoba (Arnold) Bowerman were held in the 1930s and 1940s.  I have clippings and photos from some of these, which were generously contributed by a relative.

Read about the Bowerman/Bowman family reunions!

    1. Joseph A. Bowman headstone  Maria B. Bowman headstone  Joseph A. Bowman (1799-1867) married in 1818 to Maria Badgley (ca. 1800-1875).  They had eight children and are buried in Yeoman Cemetery.

Joseph's stone is broken into two pieces.  It reads:

      JOSEPH A. BOWMAN
      DIED
      MAY 26, 1867

      & 19 D's

I assume the rest of Joseph's age at death has been broken off or is below ground on the broken-off top part (I didn't try to move the pieces around to find out).  Poucher listed the age at death as 67 years, 5 months, 19 days, making Joseph's birth year approximately 1799 or 1800.  Maria's stone reads:

      MARIA
      Wife of
      Joseph A. Bowman
      died
      April 20, 1875
      Aged 75 years

      (Photo size:  221k)

Photo sent by a relative, taken circa 1904-5 of several of the descendants of Joseph A. and Maria Bowman, mostly from the families of their sons John S. and David.  I am pretty sure that the two elderly ladies standing near the center of the photo are two of Joseph and Maria's daughters, but I have no idea which ones.  Between the two of us, we have been able to identify many of the other people in this photo.

      1. Albert Bowman  Louisa Story Bowman headstone    Albert Bowman (1820-1899) married Louisa (per headstone) or Frances (per family obituaries) Story (ca. 1836-1864).

Albert's stone is clearly legible.  The cable guardrail along the edge of the Taconic Parkway can be seen in the background.  Louisa's stone is eroded and blurred to the point where it is barely legible.  I was just able to make out LOUISA / wife of / Albert Bowman - could not read the rest of the inscription on her stone.  Poucher gives the inscription on her stone as "Bowman, Louisa, w. of Albert, & dau, of Wilbur & Eighmie Story, d. 1864, Mar. 31. a. 28 y. 27 d."

The 1870 census lists them with three children:

        1. Lillie Bowman (born ca. 1856), married a Piester.
        2. Alice Bowman (1859 - 1941), apparently never married according to her obituary.  She is listed on her brother Horace's grave stone (see below)

        3. Horace Bowman stone - back  Horace Bowman stone - front  Horace Bowman (1861 - 1941).  Family reunion clippings mention a "Mrs. Horace Bowman".  She is listed in the 1900 census as "Margaret M.".  UPDATE:  The family grave stone lists names and dates (but not relationships) for Horace, his sister Alice (see above), Margaret Ten Eyck (1866 - 1946, Horace's wife), and somebody named "Keith Bowman" with just one year of 1921 listed.  This stone is located in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.  Photos of the Horace Bowman grave stone generously contributed by a correspondent.  I also have an obituary for Horace Bowman.

After Louisa died, Albert married Helen Near (ca. 1837 - 1925) and had a son.  Helen had previously been briefly married to George W. Fraleigh and had a son Philip with him.  I have an obituary for Helen Near Fraleigh Bowman.  According to her obituary, Helen is buried somewhere in Red Hook, Dutchess County, New York.

        1. George Bowman (born ca. 1877 per 1880 census) married Mary Wing.  I have a clipping of their 50th wedding anniversary.

Albert and Louisa are buried in Yeoman Cemetery.

      2. Macy Bowman (1824 - before August, 1888).  Daughter Esther (Bowman) Sherow's obituary says Macy was married to Sally Ann Couse.  A court notice from 1888 about Macy's estate is the first one on this page - his daughter Esther (Bowman) Sherow (see below) was the executrix of his estate.  Macy is also mentioned in connection with a family heirloom high-chair in this clipping about a family reunion from 1939.  Censuses and obituaries show this couple with the following children:

        1. Franklin Bowman (born ca. 1846), married Fannie ? (born ca. 1848)
          1. Virgil Bowman (born ca. 1868)
          2. Minnie Bowman (born ca. 1870)
        2. Henry Bowman (born ca. 1848), married Mary ? (born ca. 1852)
          1. Irving Bowman (born ca. 1876)
        3. Catherine Bowman (born ca. 1849, died before 1860)
        4. Clarence Bowman (born ca. 1852), married Katie ? (born ca. 1853)
          1. Rose Bowman (born ca. 1873)
          2. Cora Bowman (born ca. 1875)
          3. Carrie Bowman (born ca. 1876)
        5. Mary Bowman (born ca. 1852)
        6. Esther Bowman (ca. 1854 - 1931), married Willett Sherow (dates unknown).  I have Esther's obituary, which mentions that when Esther died, her only surviving sibling was "Mrs. Elmer E. Eckert of Pleasant Valley".  I have not yet discovered which of Esther's sisters married Mr. Eckert, but it shouldn't be too hard to find them in a census.
        7. Gertrude Bowman (born ca. 1856)
        8. Ella Bowman (born ca. 1862)
        9. Charles Bowman (born ca. 1864)
        10. Jennie Bowman (born ca. 1865)

      3. John and Jane Bowman  John Bowman in his later years  John S. Bowman (1826 - 1906) and his wife Jane Milroy (1842-1938).  These are my great great grandparents.  John is listed in the 1850 census as "Daguerrotype Taker".  I have seen him listed in some records as "John F. Bowman".  Clicking the photo will bring up a page with their headstone (in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains) and Jane's obituaries.  The photo of John Bowman in his later years was generously contributed by another descendant.  Jane appears as an older woman in the five-generation photo in the Milroy section and also in the Bowman family reunion photo above.

John Bowman farmhouse  John Bowman farmhouse closeup - John Bowman farmhouse in Milan Township, Dutchess County, New York.  From left to right:  unidentified child (Otis' daughter Bertha?), Ida (Van Benschoten) Bowman, Jane (Milroy) Bowman, John Bowman, Otis Bowman (with horse)

John Bowman farm  John Bowman farm closeup - John Bowman's farm.  Left to right:  John Bowman, Otis Bowman, unidentified child (probably Otis' son Edward), unidentified man with horse.

Robert MilroyMary Carmichael Milroy and descendants  Jane (Milroy) Bowman's parents and siblings have their own page in the Milroy section.

        1. Otis and Ida Bowman  mystery couple  Otis Bowman grave - May 2002  Otis Bowman grave - May 2002    Otis Bowman (1860 - 1944), brother of Elma (Bowman) Simmons below, and his wife Ida Van Benschoten (1866 - 1924).  The first photo shown here was generously contributed by another relative.  The second photo is incorrectly labeled "Otis Bowman and Ada Hyde (Milroy)".  It is easy to imagine the person that wrote the label as mis-remembering the name "Ida" as "Ada" and wrongly concluding that the woman in the photo must be Ada (Hyde) Milroy.  (Ada was the second wife of William Milroy - see the Milroy section above).

I have an obituary for Ida (Van Benschoten) Bowman.  Otis and Ida's inscriptions are on the back of the same stone used by Otis' parents John S. and Jane (Milroy) Bowman in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains, NY.

In the 1930 census, Otis' household is listed as including his son Edward, his daughter Esther, his widowed sister Mary Duncan, and his widowed mother Jane.  Esther is probably actually Otis' daughter-in-law, the wife of his son Edward (see below).

Edward and Bertha Bowman as children  Otis and Ida's son Edward and daughter Bertha as young children.  This photo was generously contributed by a relative.  I find it interesting that Edward's face remained almost exactly the same from the time he was a small child to when he was an old man.  It makes it very easy to identify him in family photos.

          1. Edward Bowman as a young man  Edward and Esther (Martin) Bowman  Ed and Esther Bowman with their sons  Edward A. Bowman (born ca. 1887) married Esther Martin.  They had two sons, at least one of whom is still living.  I have an obituary for Edward's mother-in-law, Minnie (Wieghmann) Martin (1874-1933), which only mentions first names for her six sons and three unmarried daughters (out of a total of 9 daughters and a grand total of FIFTEEN surviving adult children!)

          2. Bertha (Bowman) Wirehouse  Bertha with her cat  Fernando and Bertha (Bowman) Wirehouse     Wirehouse monument  Wirehouse stone - May 2002  Bertha Bowman (1890-1983) and her husband Fernando Wirehouse (1886-1944).  Bertha and Fernando are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess Co., NY.  There is another nearly identical stone behind this one (just visible in the back of the photo on the right) for a Jacob Wirehouse and his wife Kittie Lasher - possibly Fernando's brother and his wife?  I don't think Bertha and Fernando ever had any children.  I visited the site of their farm when I visited New York in 2002 - beautiful piece of land up in the hills, but it was overgrown and starting to decay.  I think I have some photos around here somewhere - will have to dig for them.  I was told that the property was stuck in probate because there were no heirs.  I seem to remember coming across information that there was an old Wirehouse family cemetery in the area somewhere, but we didn't find it on that trip.  I have an obituary for Bertha.

        2. Elma (Bowman) Simmons  Elma Bowman (1862-1943) married in 1884 to  Charles Bruce Simmons  Charles Bruce Simmons (1861-1911).  These are my great grandparents.  Clicking Elma's photo will bring up a larger copy of the photo.  Elma is also present in the five generation Milroy photograph with her grandmother, mother, daughter, and grandson.  Clicking on Charles' photo will also bring up a page with a photo of their headstone and obituaries for Charles.  Elma collected quite a large number of newspaper clippings, many of which are obituaries of people who lived in and around Pine Plains (not necessarily relatives).  For more information on Charles and Elma and their descendants, see the Simmons section.

        3. Mary Bowman Duncan  Isaac Duncan  Aunt Mait and Grandma Simmons  Duncan gravestone  Mary Bowman (1866 - 1947) married Isaac Duncan (1865 - 1925).  The 1930 census gives her age as sixty-something, but I can't make out the second digit.  The census also gives her age at marriage as 21.  Mary was known as "Aunt Mait."  The photo on the right shows Aunt Mait (on the left) with her sister Elma (Bowman) Simmons (1862 - 1943, see above) listening to the radio in the Triebel family's apartment upstairs in the old Triebel's Garage building in Red Hook, NY.  This is the only photo my family has which shows Aunt Mait.  The portraits of Mary and Isaac Duncan in their youth were generously contributed by another relative.

Mary and Isaac are buried in Nine Partners Cemetery in Millbrook, Dutchess County, NY.  A correspondent has generously submitted Mary's obituary.

        4. Louisa Bowman headstone  Louisa Bowman (ca. 1870 - 1873).  Louisa is buried in "Yeoman's Ground" in Milan Township, Dutchess County, New York.  One of the obituaries of Louisa's mother Jane (Milroy) Bowman has this information wrong - says Louisa "...died in infancy in 1868."  Louisa's stone reads as follows:

          LOUISA
          daughter of
          J. S. and Jane
          BOWMAN
          died Dec. 7, 1873
          aged 3 yrs, 8 mos.
          5 days

      4. Caroline Bowman (1828 - 1887).  I have no further information on Caroline except that I did find what appears to be an entry for her stone in an online transcription of J. D. Poucher's survey of the Hicksite Friends' Burial Ground in Clinton Corners, Dutchess Co., NY.  This entry lists her as Caroline Bowman Hicks, "wife of Gilbert".  There is also an entry for Cora, "daughter of Gilbert & Caroline" who died in 1874 at the age of 17.  The following entries for Gilbert and Caroline's children are according to the 1870 and 1880 Federal Census of Stanford Township, Dutchess County, NY.

        1. Willett Hicks (born ca. 1853, 1870 census lists him as "Wilber")
        2. Emma Hicks (born ca. 1857)
        3. Cora Hicks (ca. 1857 - 1874)
        4. David Hicks (born ca. 1860)
        5. Mary Hicks (born ca. 1863)
        6. Caroline "Carry" Hicks (born ca. 1865)
        7. Charles Hicks (born ca. 1869)
        8. Albert Hicks (born ca. 1871)

      5. David Bowman  Lucinda Thorne Bowman  Lucinda Thorne Bowman - wider shot  David and Lucinda in their later years  Bowman family stone in Stanfordville cemetery  Bowman family stone in Stanfordville cemetery  David Bowman (1831-1910) married Lucinda Thorn or Thorne (1834-1920).  They had at least six children.  I have David's obituary, which helpfully mentions ALL his children that survived to adulthood whether living or dead.  I wish I had obituaries like that for more of my relatives.

David and Lucinda and several of their family are buried in Stanfordville Cemetery.  The family stone reads as follows:

        DAVID BOWMAN
        JULY 9, 1831 - JULY 10, 1910

        LUCINDA THORN, his wife
        FEB. 14, 1834 - JAN. 20, 1920

        RHEUMMA M. BOWMAN - RIKERT
        NOV. 2 1855 - NOV. 21, 1875

        GRACE M. BOWMAN - DUNCAN
        JUNE 30, 1868 - SEPT. 7, 1904

All of the photos of David and Lucinda, their family, and their graves were generously provided by a descendant.  There are a LOT of photos of this family, so I made another page for the ones that don't quite fit anywhere else.

View miscellaneous photos of David and Lucinda (Thorn) Bowman
        and their family.

View unidentified photos from the same collection - may be relatives, neighbors, or family friends.  Can you help identify these people?

          2. Leona A. Decker  Leona A. Decker (born ca. 1891), married a Mr. Bradley.  The Bowman family reunion clippings mention a Mrs. Sterling Bradley and a Mrs. Donald Bradley - not sure which one is Leona.  A clipping dated August 14, 1952 mentions "Mrs. Leona Bradley" in attendance at a meeting of the Stanford Cemetery association.

        4. 1848 - 1923

          ROSA A. BOWMAN

            APRIL 29, 1890 - NOVEMBER 29, 1994

Mr and Mrs Bowman, Jess and Dave  This photo is labeled only "Mr. and Mrs. Bowman, Jess and Dave".  I believe the people in it are (left to right), Jessie (Dean) Bowman, her husband David W. Bowman, David's mother Jennie (Duncan) Bowman, David's father Walter D. Bowman.  Love the outfits!

        6. Grace Bowman as a child  Grace (Bowman) Duncan  George Duncan  George Duncan's grave  Grace Bowman (1868 - 1904) married George R. Duncan (1863 - 1930).  The following info according to a relative:  "George and Grace were married July 10, 1886.  After she died he married Myra Priscilla Case (1873 - 1925) in 1911.  He and Grace had two kids, Elsie D.(1889-1977) and Stanley Thorne Duncan (1887-1948)."  George and Grace and Myra are all buried in Nine Partners Cemetery.  The Duncan stone reads:

          DUNCAN

          GEORGE R.
          1863 - 1930

          HIS WIFE
          MYRA CASE

(Grace is buried in her parents' plot - see the stone for David and Lucinda (Thorne) Bowman above)

          1. Stanly Thorne Duncan  Stanley Thorne Duncan (1887 - 1948)
          2. Elsie in Florida in 1933 with two friends.  Elsie D. Duncan (1889 - 1977) married Harry C. Creamer (died 1972).  Elsie's obituary does not mention any surviving children.

      6. Clarissa Bowman Northrup headstone  Clarissa Bowman (1836 - 1907) married Mortimer C. Northrup (dates unknown).  They had at least one daughter whose name I don't know.  Clarissa is buried in "Yeoman's Ground".  I increased the contrast on this photo of her stone slightly to make it a bit easier to read.  Mortimer may be there also, but I did not see a stone for him.  Clarissa's stone reads:

        CLARISSA BOWMAN
        WIFE OF
        MORTIMER C. NORTHRUP
        1836 - 1907

      7. Phoebe Bowman (b. 1840 - before 1910).  I have no further information on Phoebe save that she was still listed as living with her parents in the 1860 Federal census for Milan Township.

    2. Otis Eseck Bowman (b. 1803) married Sarah Hicks (b. 1804).  The 1850 census shows his wife's name as "Sally".  Sarah is shown living alone with her children in the 1860 census of Milan Township - Otis may have died by that point.  Their oldest daughter Sarah is not living with them in 1860 - she had probably already married Otis Moore.  Otis and Sarah had numerous descendants.

      1. Sarah Bowman (1823 - 1906) married Otis Moore (d. 1886).  They had at least six children.  I have Sarah's obituary, which names surviving siblings and children.  According to this obituary, Sarah and Otis lived for several years in Rensselaer County, NY, before returning to Milan Township of Dutchess County.  The following listings are based on the 1870 and 1880 Federal censuses for Milan Township, with additional information provided by descendants of this line:

        1. Lussetta/Lucetta Moore (1845 - 1907) married Walter Hicks (1835 - 1899).
          1. Fred Moore (1869 - 1956)
          2. Sadie Moore (1880 - 1957) married John Perkins.

        2. Josephine Moore (1848 - 1932) married Leonard Porter (1839 - 1920) in 1872.

        7. Lizzie Moore Barton grave  Elizabeth "Lizzie" Moore (1866 - 1910) married Fred Barton in 1883.  This is the same Fred Barton who later married Nina Porter, the daughter of Elizabeth's sister Josephine (see above).  I have an obituary for Elizabeth.  Lizzie is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.

          1. Lee A. Barton grave  Anthony Barton.  I have no dates for this individual and he is not listed in the 1900 census.  UPDATE:  In a photo of this family's plot, there is a stone for "Lee A. Barton", born and died 1887.  Possibly the same person?  Lee A. Barton is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.

          2. Roy Barton grave  Roy Barton  Roy Barton (1889-1909).  I have two long obituaries for Roy.  Roy is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Pine Plains, Dutchess County, New York.

      2. Pulaski Bowman (ca. 1837 - before 1906).  Married a woman named Martha (born ca. 1842/3).  I have found a listing for what may be this couple buried in a cemetery in Goshen, Connecticut at the following website:  http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ctlitch2/cemeteries/goshen12.htm.  The entries (for Hall Meadow Cemetery) read as follows:

Bowman, Martha H. Seeley, wife of Pulaski, born 1842, died 1904.
        Bowman, Pulaski, 1st Lieut. (Co. F. 150th Regt. N.Y.V.) born 1836, died 1901.

      3. Amy Ann Bowman (ca. 1841 - after 1906) married Thomas N. Davis (dates unknown)

      4. USA Veteran's Flag  Jacob S. Bowman (ca. 1843 - 1911) married Julie or Julia Hicks in 1866.  She may have died and Jacob remarried because the widow that filed his Civil War pension was named Eliza.  Julia's middle initial is listed as "E." in the 1880 census, so it is also possible that Julia and Eliza were the same woman.  Jacob was in Company C, 128th NYSV in the Civil War.  Jacob's obituary mentions the existence of surviving children and grandchildren, but not their names.  The 1880 census lists them with the following three children - handwriting was a little difficult, so the names are as best as I could make them out.

        1. Lina A. Bowman, born ca. 1869 / 1870 (she is also listed in the 1870 census as "not named" infant daughter)
        2. Ada L. Bowman, born ca. 1874
        3. Wilber J. Bowman, born ca. 1877, married Mae Sadler (1875 - 1946), had son Dr. Ralph J. Bowman.

      5. Mary Bowman (ca. 1847 - after 1920) married Philetus R. Seeley (ca. 1844 - after 1920)

      6. Henry Bowman (ca. 1847 - before 1906).  Henry does not appear in the 1860 census - may have died young.

    3. Sands Bowman (ca. 1808 - 1837).  According to the Poucher survey, Sands is buried in Yeoman Cemetery in Milan Township, but I was unable to find his stone on my visit.

Sands Bowman's grave  UPDATE:  A relative found Sands' stone in Stanfordville Cemetery.  I guess Dr. Poucher misremembered the location of the grave in his survey.  According to this photo, Sands had a wife named Sarah (ca. 1811 - 1868).  Another researcher says her maiden name was Green.  I tried to enhance the contrast on the stone to make it easier to read.  The inscription appears to read as follows:

      SANDS BOWMAN
      Died Oct 28, 1837
      Aged 29 yrs, ? mos
      & 17 ds

      SARAH
      wife of
      Sands Bowman
      Died Mar 15, 1868
      Aged 56 yrs, 3 mos
      & 6 ds

Dr. Poucher did list Sands in the proper cemetery which is transcribed here:  Community Ground, Stanfordville (page 1).  I don't know why he listed Sands in Yeoman's Ground - perhaps he got his notes mixed up?

Info on Sands' descendants from another researcher and from the 1880 US Census for Pleasant Valley, Dutchess County, New York:

      1. John Martin Bowman (1831 - 1902) married first to Ann Eliza Tripp (ca. 1836 - 1858).  His second wife was Catherine /Ann Eliza Fowler (ca. 1837 - 1895).  All three are also buried in the Community Ground in Stanfordville (see above link).

John had one son with his first wife Ann Eliza Tripp:

        1. Charles White Bowman (1857 - 1943) married Catherine Cornellus.

and three sons with his second wife Catherine Fowler:

        1. Sands J. Bowman (born ca. 1863)
        2. George N. Bowman (born ca. 1865)
        3. Arther M. Bowman (born ca. 1872)
