Turning Off AOL Compressed Graphics

If the images you see on all websites always look blurry and distorted, or if AOL insists on saving image files as .ART files, you probably have compressed images turned on.  AOL defaults to this setting when installed - the user must turn it off.  Unless you have a very slow internet connection or an older slower computer with a very small memory, you will probably want to disable this feature.  You will only need to perform this simple procedure once.

I used AOL 4.0 for this example - other versions of AOL should be similar.

  1. Under "My AOL", click "Preferences".  You should get a screen resembling the one below.  Click the icon that I've circled in red (World Wide Web preferences) - in some versions, this may be labeled "Internet Properties".

  2. You should now see a screen resembling the one below.  Click on the tab that says "Web Graphics" and make sure the box that says "use compressed graphics" (shown here circled in red) is UN-checked.  If the box has a mark in it, click on it to clear it.

More recent versions may have several choices, from which you must select one.  If this is the case, select (left-click on) the one that says "Never compress graphics" or something similar.

  3. Click "OK" and you're done!  Web graphics should look much better on your computer now and you won't have to save graphics in .ART format.  Happy surfing!
