About ancestral photographs of Upstate New York

My family is incredibly lucky to have so many wonderful old family photographs.  Since many of these people had large families, I felt that it was only fair to post these photos on the web so that other relatives and descendants could see what these people looked like.  If you have a photo of someone related to one of these families that you'd like to share, feel free to submit it (see my Photo Submission Guidelines below) and indicate whether or not you want your name and/or email address listed with it.  I am also including some cemetery/headstone photos, so feel free to share those as well.

These pages are for photographs of deceased ancestors and relatives only.  There may also be a few old photos and portraits of whole families where any still-living individuals have been deliberately left unidentified to protect their privacy.  There are also obituaries, newspaper clippings, family info, etc. included with some of these folks (right now, just on Dad's side of the family) and I hope to eventually also include family stories that come down through various relatives.

Photo Submission Guidelines

I welcome photo submissions, but please DO NOT send large image files to my hotmail address - the mailbox is very small and can easily get blocked up with large attached files.  If you would like to send me a photo, please send it to treebz65@aol.com instead.

I prefer PNG files scanned at around 300 dpi.  This helps provide a sharper more detailed image for me put on the web.  It will look enormous on your monitor - THIS IS NORMAL for such high resolution scans.  For black & white photos, greyscaling (forcing the graphics program to remove all the color information from an image) helps reduce file size, but if you have something with a little color in it that you'd like to keep, like a hand-tinted photo, you may want to avoid greyscaling.

If you don't understand any of this, or your graphics program doesn't support PNG files, just send me a JPG instead (preferably scanned at 300 dpi).  If you know how to set JPG compression in your graphics program, please DON'T use more than 30 percent compression (some paint programs show a percentage of quality instead of a compression rate - in that case don't use less than 70 percent quality).  Compressing them too much makes them look blurry and awful.  Large file sizes are okay - they will be thumbnailed anyway.  GIF files are okay, but only for black and white photos please.

I like high resolution scans because that way I can do any needed touchups (cloning out small scratches, for example) and then resize them down small enough to fit on the web page.  Hi-res scans also tend to have better detail.  All of my own photos were done this way.

Try to include some information with your photo - at least name, dates, etc. if you know them.  Also please keep in mind that it may take several days for me to get your photo uploaded to my web site.
