Dear Madam:

Reference is made to your letter in which you request information in reguard to John Brandon, Revolutionary War Soldier from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The data furnished herein were obtained from the papers on file

in pension claim, W.5946, based on service of John Brandon during the War of the Revolution. John Brandon was born December 4, 1753 (old style), place not stated, nor are names of his parents given. While a resident of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, he volunteered in the summer of 1776 and served under Captain John Baird at Fort Pitt, during the Treaty with the Indians, length of this service not shown. He volunteered in December following and was chosed

ensigh, served in Captain George Baird's regiment, was in frequent skirmishes with the Indians and served until March, 1777. He returned to Westmoreland County, and during the summer of 1777 was out on several occasions in periods of four or five days at a time against the Indians on the frontier. He volunteered in February, 1778, and was appointed adjutant and served under Colonel's Pomeroy and Mounts against the Indians on the "waters of the Big Beaver." He volunteered in November, 1778, and served two months as adjutant in Captain Matthew Jack's company, Colonel James Smith's Pennsylvania regiment. He was commissioned, March 11, 1779, lieutenant of a company raised for the protection of the frontiers of Westmoreland County, and served about eight months in Captain Nehemiah Stokeley's company, Colonel Broadhead's 8th Pennsylvania regiment. He was twice Sheriff of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. He was living in 1818 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. He was allowed a pension by the state of Pennsylvania on account of his services in the War of the Revolution. He died November 27, 1823. John Brandon married August 14, 1781, in Mount Pleasant, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, Mary Hall. She was born March 31,

1765, place not stated, nor are the names of her parents shown. She was living in 1824 in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. She was allowed pension on her application executed July 12, 1848, then a resident of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. She was also allowed a pension by the state of Pennsylvania. Their children as shown in the claim" Margaret Born May 15,1782; Martha born March 16, 1786; William Hall born August 24, 1788; Mary born March 09, 1792; John Lock born June 01, 1794; Samuel Rutherford born February 17, 1796; Elizabeth born August 02, 1801; Thomas Jefferson born July 20, 1802; Sarah A.W. born March 01, 1806; James born April 06, 1811; A grandson, John G. Brandon, son of Samuel Rutherford Brandon, was living in 1870 in Petrolia, Butler County, Pennsylvania. It is stated that the only surviving children of John Brandon and

his wife Mary, were in 1879, James Brandon, then living in Clarington, Forest County, Pennsylvania, and Mrs. Sarah Gilson, when last heard from, living in Steubenville, Ohio. James Hall, brother of the widow, Mary Brandon, made affidavit in 1824 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania.

HUTCHISON, Cornelius - born 1757 England, Sketches of Revolutionary Soldiers of Indiana County, Pa by Frances Strong Helman. CORNELIUS HUTCHISON, according to his application for pension, August 29, 1819, was 62 years old. He enlisted in the month of May 1778, at Shippensurg, Cumberland county, Pennyslvania, in a company commanded by Captain Samuel Talbert, Col. Walter Stewart's Regiment, Pennsylvania Line; and was discharged January 15, 1781, at Trenton, NJ. The soldier stated he participated in the battles of Monmouth, Springfield, and the blockhouse battle where General Anthony Wayne commanded. He was also in Capt. Matthew Scott's company. From records provided by descendants, Cornelius Hutchison was born in England in 1757; in 1786, he married Eleanor McGuire (also called Nellie), 1766-1841. They are believed to have come to what is now Indiana county about 1796. Cornelius Hutchison died March 10, 1832 and is buried in Hice's graveyard near New Florence, but in Indiana County. The exact location of the grave is unknown. Died October 3, 1848 Wheatfield Twp., Indiana Co., PA, buried Hice Cemetery, S. Mahoning Twp. Military unknown. KINTER, Isabelle Finley - w/o John Kinter, m. August 16, 1782, born December 31, 1763 Philadelphia, PA, died September 30, 1853 Kintersburg,Indiana Co., PA. They had nine children. She was a sister of Mary and they were from Philadelphia.

KINTER, Peter – brother of John Kinter, born 1757 Upper Paxtang Twp., Lancaster Co., now Dauphin Co. and died March 8, 1816 in Indiana County near Kintersburg. Burial place is uncertain, but may be in same place as John. He was married first to Mary Findley who was born February 1763 and died about 1811. He married second, Elizabeth Jackson. It is believed that she died about 1821. He had seven children by Mary and three by Elizabeth. He served in a Captain Murray’s Co. in 1779. Ref: Stephenson IV: 447.

KINTER, Philip, Jr. – born in 1752 in Upper Paxtang Twp., Lancaster Co., died February 21, 1829 in Erie Co., PA. He is a brother of John and Peter. He served one year on the PA Line in Captain John Louden’s Co., Col. Thompson’s Regiment. He married Mary Catherine about 1772. They had seven children. They are buried in the Old English Presbyterian Churchyard, Dauphin, PA.

WORK, William - Pvt. Army, born February 14, 1760 Cumberland County, PA, a son of Samuel Work, served in the Cumberland County Militia, during the Revolution. His name appears on militia rolls in 1777-78-80-81-82. In 1799, with his brother John, also a Revolutionary veteran, William Work mirgrated to Westmoreland county, and spent some time at the fort at the foot of Squirrel Hill, near the present location of the town of New Florence. In 1804, the Work brothers and their families settled in Mahoning township, in the part now known as East Mahoning. For several years William Work taught school in the community, and is believed to have been the first school teacher in Mahoning Township. Before coming to Indiana county he was a singing master in Cumberland County. He was influential in the organization of the Gilgal Presbyterian Church, and was enrolled with it's first members. Cancer ended his service to county and community on April1, 1828, and he is buried in the Gilgal Cemetery. Genealogical Records: William Work m. Miriam Scroggs, 1n 1792. She was b. 30 Jan. 1775; d. 28 Jun 1850, E. Mahoning Twp. ; bur. Gilgal Church, She was a dau. of Alexander Scroggs, Newton Twp., Cumberland Co., and 2nd wife, Rachel Ireland. Alexander Scroggs was born 1704, in Scotland; d. 1785, Cumberland Co., Pa. Had 21 children.
