Traces WmDavis Another Davis Family Tree

Project Background
This Geographic Project is focused primarily on the Davis surname but is open to all families with roots in Ulster County, New York, and surrounding area. The purpose of this project is to provide a place where Y Chromosome DNA test results from this geographical area can be shown side by side so that family connections, and non-connections, can be easily seen.
Goals
Our goal is to use Y-DNA testing to firmly establish the relationships of the various early Ulster County area families, including the well known and documented family of Christopher "Kit" Davis, one of the earliest European settlers of what is now Ulster County, New York.
We encourage any males with early paternal line roots in Ulster County to join us. Females whose direct paternal line originates from this area can have a paternal side male relative test for this project.
For more information on how we've already used Genetic Genealogy, how we hope to continue using it in the future, and how to join us see the article "Genetic Genealogy, Finding Our Roots Through DNA", in Traces issue #4, October 2009.

We continue to receive inquiries from our readers who are looking for information about their Davises. If you recognize a name or two and would like to connect, please contact us for information.

by Richard Davis
The Accord Cemetery is located in the tiny hamlet of Accord, Rochester Township, Ulster County, NY. There are now fifty-six named Davises in the Accord Cemetery, one of the largest concentrations of Davises in any cemetery in Ulster and surrounding counties. Little by little I've managed to put together a clear picture of who all these Davises are. I'm now certain that all but 5 are from the families of Conrad Davis (37) and Moses Davis (14), and that the remaining 5 are descendants of Cornelius Tack Davis. With several other hints, the proximity here of the families of Conrad and Moses (my own most distant Davis) had long suggested to me that they might have been related. Our research has not yet answered that question. We still feel these Davises are connected in some way yet to be discovered. Our search goes on.

To the right is a small map of the Accord Cemetery with the location of the Davis plots, the letters corresponding to the families listed below. The cemetery is entered from the bottom center, the oval cart path is just discernible. Most of the dates I show here are taken directly from the stones. For the older, no longer legible stones the dates are from the 1931 book Old Gravestones of Ulster County, NY, by Poucher and Terwilliger. Also, more information on nearly all the Davises listed here can be found in our Traces GEDCOM on RootsWeb.
A. Family of Joseph W. Davis, son of Conrad
The largest Davis plot in the cemetery with headstones naming 15 Davises, is that of Joseph Davis, born 28 Mar 1820, and his wife, Charity Schoonmaker, born 20 Sep 1824. Joseph was the third son of Conrad Davis and Jane Schoonmaker. With Joseph and Charity are 5 of their children; daughters Sarah J., Chattie (Charity Maria) and Florence; and sons, Joachim H., and Conrad Ralph. Spouses of these children include Henry Haines, husband of Florence, Frances Dumond, wife of Jaochim, and Elizabeth Whitbeck, wife of Conrad. Also interred here are 3 sons of Joachim H.; Philip Dumond, Julian Henry and Elliot S.; as well as Louisa Sterz, wife of Julian Henry; Walter Sterz, son of Julian Henry; and "Little Allen", son of Samuel Teller Davis (son of Joseph and Charity, not interred here).

C. Calvin Davis, son of Conrad
Directly forward of the headstones of Joseph Davis and Charity Schoonmaker, among the trees and various unrelated headstones, lies Calvin Davis, born 26 May 1826, the fourth son of Conrad and Jane. Though he was twice married, had at least 6 children, and lived his entire life in the nearby community of Hurley, he appears to lie here with no other members of his immediate family.
Davis, Calvin, Co. C, 10 REG'T U.S. 1., Apr 18, 1889 at 62-6-5
D. Family of Jacob Davis, son of Conrad
To the right of Calvin's grave is the plot of Conrad and Jane's second son, Jacob Davis, born 8 Aug 1814. With him are his first wife, Phebe Schoonmaker, born 2 May 1819, died 5 Jan 1857; and second wife, Jamima Barley, 25 Nov 1835 to 14 Mar 1908. And with them are 4 children, 2 daughters of Phebe, --ytte ( name unclear), and Jane Ann, both of whom died on the same day, 4 Feb 1844; and a son and daughter of Jamima, Clark and Leah. All 4 of these children died very young.

E. Family of Mead Davis, grandson of Conrad
Over to the left and a bit closer as you come into the cemetery, and under several tall trees, is the plot of Mead Davis, born 22 Feb 1871, a son of Jacob and Jamima. This plot is marked by a very large gravestone with only the name Davis on it (used for the banner at the top of this article). In front of this large stone are small stones for Mead, his wife Dinah, and two sons Earl and Ernest, both of whom died in their infancy. Nearby is the gravestone of Iona Simpson Davis, daughter of Mead and Dinah.

Davis, Mead, 1871 - 1946
Davis, Dinah Markle, 1871 - 1940
Davis, Ernest L., 1895 - 1895
Davis, Earl J., 1891 - 1892
Simpson, Iona Davis, w/o Sheridan, 1890 - 1964
F. Family of Jerome Davis, grandson of Conrad
Near the center of the cemetery but just to the right, is the plot of Jerome Davis, born 11 Jul 1865, brother of Mead and son of Jacob and Jamima. On one large stone are Jerome, his wife, Agnes C. Lawrence, and daughter Ruby V. On the back of this stone are Ethel M. Davis, daughter of Jerome and Agnes, and her husband, R. Leroy Morris, and son Robert L. Morris.
Davis, Jerome, Jul. 11, 1865 - Aug. 14, 1907
Davis, Agnes C. Lawrence, w/o Jerome, Feb 21, 1864 - June 27, 1901
Davis, Ruby V., June 30, 1890 - Sept. 15, 1923
Morris, Ethel M. Davis, w/o R. Leroy, Mar. 24, 1888 - June 12, 1981
G. Families of Abraham and Henry Davis, grandsons of Moses
Across the cemetery to the left, and back under the grove of trees is the plot of brothers, Abraham and Henry Davis, sons of Cornelius Davis and Elizabeth Depuy Schoonmaker. Cornelius was the first son of Moses Davis and his first wife Jane Van Benschoten.
Abraham
Abraham's stone says he was born 1841, but church records show he was born 2 Nov 1842. With him are his wife, Mary E. Brodhead, two of their daughters, Emma and Belle, and one son, George, with his wife Kathryn. Also here are Alberta, daughter of George and Kathryn, and Spencer, son of Alberta's brother, Donald Abraham Davis (not interred here).
Davis, Abraham, 1841-1910
Davis, Mary E. Brodhead, w/o Abram, 1845 - 1923
Davis, Emma, 1865 - 1950
Enderly, Belle Davis, w/o Edwin, 1874 - 1928
Davis, George, 1882 -
Davis, Kathryn, w/o George 1880 -
Davis, Alberta, 1911-1951
Davis, Spencer
Henry
Henry's half of this plot is marked by a large stone for Henry, his wife Lydia E. Schoonmaker and their son Earl, who died just short of his seventh birthday. On the back of this stone is another son, Lorin, and his wife Jennie Green. To the left of this large stone are two small stones, one marked "Mother" the other "Father", undoubtedly the resting place of Henry and Lydia. Interestingly, directly in front of the stone marked "Father" is another, smaller stone, simply marked, "Kathryn". We have no record for Kathryn but assume it is of an infant or child.
Davis, Henry, 1846 - 1914
Davis, Lydia E. Schoonmaker, w/o Henry, 1857 - 1924
Davis, Earl, s/o Henry & Lydia, June 11, 1889 - May 20, 1906
Davis, Lorin, 1881 - 1971
Davis, Jennie Green, w/o Lorin, 1890 - 1970
Davis, Kathryn, (infant death?)
H. Family of Samuel Davis
The plot of Samuel Davis, born 15 Jun 1891, is in the center of the cemetery, inside the long oval of the cart path that runs almost the length of the cemetery. Samuel's lineage still needs to be fully researched but it is believed that he is a descendant of Cornelius Tack Davis. If my theory is correct that Moses and Conrad are related, then Samuel and family are the only unrelated Davises in the Accord Cemetery. With Samuel are his wife, Eva F. Turner, and sons Kenneth and Ernest, and Ernest's wife, Edith Irwin.
Davis, Samuel W., June 15, 1891 - May 9, 1932
Davis, Eva F. Turner, w/o Samuel W., Sept. 11, 1891 - Jan 10, 1975
Davis, Ernest W., Jun. 29, 1920 - May 6, 1995
Davis, Edith Irwin, w/o Ernest W., 1921 - 1995
Davis, Kenneth F., STAFF SGT. 87 INF, 1916 - 1943
I. Sarah M. Davis, granddaughter of Conrad
The small plot of Sarah M. Davis and her husband Thomas Smith, is also in the center of the cemetery fairly close to the entrance. Sarah, born 1840, was the oldest daughter of John William Davis and a granddaughter of Conrad Davis and Jane Schoonmaker. Thomas Smith died in 1877, and at least by 1900 Sarah was remarried to a Fred Lawrence. They were still together by the 1910 census, Sarah 69 and Fred 75. So, though her name is on this stone with Thomas Smith (with birth date but no death date) it is possible she was ultimately burred elsewhere. We can only hope poor Thomas is not still waiting.
Smith, Sarah M. Davis, 1840 - ____
Smith, Thomas S., 1837 - 1877

Final Notes
Photographs of most of the gravestones of the above mentioned Davises can also be found on FindaGrave.com. Also note that the book, Town of Rochester Cemeteries, Ulster County, New York, published by Friends of Historic Rochester, lists two more Davises, Theodore and wife, Maria. But this is an error, Theodore was a Haines, as seen on the stone at right. I do not yet know Maria's maiden name, if anyone knows if she was a Davis let us know.

We are happy to report that we have two new Davises in our DNA Project. The First is a descendant of Joseph Davis, b abt 1830 in Ulster County. Joseph was likely a son of John Davis, born about 1810, and Bridget Hendrickson, born 1814. John and Bridget are first found in the Fallsburg township of Sullivan county, NY, in the 1840 and 1850 censuses. We were hoping to prove a connection between John and Henry Peter Davis, who is also found in Fallsburg at that time. But the 37 marker results from a recent test shows no connection, not to Henry nor any of our Davis lines so far. The Second is believed to be a descendant of William Christopher Davis (Mentioned in "Making Connections" in Traces Issue #7). William is believed to have been born about 1823 in Ulster County, a son of Henry Davis and Anna Wutenburg who appear in the 1820 census for Marbletown, Ulster Co., NY. We await the first DNA results from this Davis descendant.
We also have another branch of the Devins family in Canada who has been tested to 37 markers and is two markers off from our first Devins family (now tested to 67 markers). Both of these lines are believed to be descendants of Terrence Devins, a supposed son of Solomon David/Davids from the Minisink area. But if Solomon is a descendant of Joris Davids, son of Kit Davids and Cornelia DeVos, then there is a problem somewhere. These Devins descendants show strong connections to Devine (various spellings) families in Ireland, so it's unlikely their paternal lines are descendants of Kit.
As mentioned in our last newsletter we have established a General Fund for our DNA Project. The fund has been set up so that those of us who benefit from the DNA testing done by others, can contribute to the project in a meaningful way. After several generous donations we have a balance of $180, thanks to all of you who are helping make this project a success.
For more information on our DNA Project see "Ulster County New York Y-DNA Project", above left. For more info on our General Fund see "NEW! General Fund" in last month's Newsletter #7.
