Three Orange County Davis Families
With Roots in Ulster County

by Richard Davis and Diana Davis Deppe

Researching a family tree will invariably lead to distant family members who seem to appear out of the blue, with no written records showing who their parents, aunts, uncles or siblings might have been. Without such records it's often very difficult to trace a line back beyond the genealogist's nightmare, the Brick Wall. This is the case with our Davis line, which goes back to Moses, born about 1800, probably in the Rochester township area of Ulster County. In order to get past such a brick wall it's often necessary to research other families living in the same area in the hope of finding a clue that connects one family to another and thereby solving the puzzle. This is the reason for our research of one family in this issue, that of Moses E. Davis. There is reason to believe these two Moses Davises were related, not the least of which is the name, Moses, which is common in both families, much less common in other Davis families from that time and place.

Another reason for furthering research of a distant family line is to find an elusive piece of solid proof that connects one to another. We are fairly certain that the family of Simon Davis and our own are related. If our research is correct Simon was a half brother of our great-grandfather, Thomas Davis Sr., but no solid proof has yet been found.

Apparently independent of one another, all three of these families, that of Moses E. Davis, Thomas Davis Sr., and Simon Davis, migrated from Ulster County to Orange County in the late 1800s to early 1900s, many family members settling in and around the Middletown area.

In this issue we outline these three families hoping that by doing so we may find living descendants who could provide clues to their origins, prove or disprove their relationship, and fill in some of the missing pieces. We have a few more recent names from these families as well but for privacy reasons have not printed them here. If anyone reading this recognizes a possible family member we would very much like to hear from you!

Here are a few of the warm responses from our first issue:

Many thanks for the newsletter. The Lydia Markle, daughter of Cornelius Markle and Mary Conner is in My mother's side of the Markle family. My parents both being Markle's. Its qute interesting, my wife grew up in Napanoch and was friends with some of the Irwin's... Thanks again for remembering me. Don Markle

Thanks so much! the first newsletter looks great! I hope I can be of help to you in the days ahead. Happy holidays! JoAnn Stoeppler

This is wonderful! Yes, DO keep me on the mailing list!... What struck me(in my mind) is the amazing resemblance of my cousin to the photo of Thomas Davis seen in your newsletter! (also to his father, my uncle William Davis). It is hard to say just what it is. I don't think I am imagining it. I'll send you some photos that I have of "my" Davis cousins. Susan Schock

I am printing off a copy of your newsletter and will give it to my daughter's mother-in-law at Christmas as she is old-time Ulster County as well. I also forwarded it to another family researcher (my father's side) as I have a Kate Davis (d. 1937), wife of James O'Neal, son of Samuel O'Neal and Margaret Bennett, and most recently, a Michele Davis m. to Charles William Wells, grandson of Beatrice Moshier Wells, another Bennett descendent... Ruth Prol

This is nothing short of fabulous! Thank you so much for sending it along to me. I am so glad you thought to share this with me. Amy Storer

I know alot of the Davis clan in Accord, Ulster Co, NY (I used to live there) next time I'm down there I will try and contact a few of them and see where they descend from. Thanks again for sending me the newsletter, it's very kind of you. Floyd DeWitt

DNA Genealogy

We have used DNA to help prove our family lines back to our earliest known Davis ancestor in the 1700s and early 1800s, an upcoming article will explain how. Other articles will outline how we would like to continue to use DNA to prove our lines further back, past our "brick walls", as well as prove some of the prominent Davis families in early Ulster County. If anyone has a DNA Genealogy story they would like to share send it asap and we will try to include it.

Davises in Accord Cemetery
Over 45 Davises are listed in the Accord Rural Cemetery, Ulster County, New York. Our research suggests that nearly all come from two patriarchs, Conrad Davis, born about 1790, and Moses Davis, born about 1800. Were these men related?

Kit Davis
Christopher "Kit" Davis, interpreter, trapper and generally colorful character, was one of the first settlers of what is now Ulster County. How many of us will prove to be related to him?

Henry Wooden Davis
We will share some personal recollections about Henry Wooden Davis and his son, James Wallace Davis, proprietor of the Davis Hotel in Livingston Manor, NY, as recorded by the latter's granddaughter.

And More...

The Family of Moses E. Davis
by Richard Davis

Moses E. Davis was born about 1846 in Fallsburg Township, Sullivan County, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Davis. A marriage announcement in the Ellenville Journal says he was married in Fallsburg to Abbie C. Smith on the 12th of January, 1870, the same day and place his sister, Ellen, was married to Edgar Gray. At the time of the 1880 census Moses and Abbie had four sons, Emery, born about 1871, Oscar Bertrum, born about 1873, Gideon, born about 1877 and Alexander, born about 1879. The obituary of Moses E. Davis in the Middletown Daily Argus of 27 Aug 1894 says that Moses lived in Sullivan County until about 1888 when he moved with his family to Middletown where he worked first at Clemson Brothers' saw factory, and later for the Morgan Music Store. His obituary also says Moses died at his home, 53 Hanford Street, and that he was survived by his wife and 3 sons, Gideon apparently having died before the age of 17. All three of Moses' surviving sons continued to live in Orange County, Emery and Oscar in Middletown, Alexander in Montgomery.

Emery
Emery's marriage certificate says he was married January 28, 1892 to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hadden, the daughter of John Hadden and Mary Van Ness. There is some confusion about Lizzie's parentage, not unusual in the field of genealogy, but we believe she was born a Van Gordon, then raised by John and Mary after her birth mother died. A wedding announcement in the Middletown Daily Press says that Emery was in the employ of Morgan & Wilbur Music Store at the time of his marriage. Emery was only 27 when he died on November 14, 1898, leaving behind his wife and two young children, Esther, born October 1895, and Ralph Emery, born September 27, 1897. In 1923 Esther married Harold Vernooy with whom she had three children, 1 boy and 2 girls. Ralph was married to Edna Winters in 1919, they had 5 children, 4 boys and a girl. In the 1930s Ralph ran a well drilling business, "Ralph E. Davis & Sons", he died in 1939.

Oscar
Oscar was married about 1895, we have only a first name for his wife, Margaret. We know that Margaret died in 1932 but do not have a death date for Oscar. Oscar was listed as a cigar maker from the 1900 to 1920 censuses, by 1930 he was a salesman for Rockland Light and Power Company. They had 2 children, Mildred and Robert. Mildred is in the 1920 census living with her parents and one daughter, Margaret, her last name was Lacking but no husband is listed. In the 1932 obit for her mother Mildred is listed as the wife of Walter Bradshaw. The only information we've found on the wife of Robert Davis is in the Middletown census of 1930 where she is listed as Emily D., they had been married less than a year, and Robert was then working in a fur factory. When Robert died in Newburgh in 1982 he was living on Hudson Avenue and had been living there for 30 years. He was survived by 2 sons and 2 daughters.

Alexander
We know very little about Alexander Davis. He married Sadie E. Scott about 1899, and they had only one child, Mary Y., born about 1904. Alexander died in 1910 at the age of 31, Sadie was 66 when she died in 1947.

Moses E. Davis and his son Emery both worked at Morgan & Wilbur. This ad is from the Chester Coronet Band Concert Program, May 20, 1892.

The Family of Simon Davis
by Richard Davis

Simon Davis was born May 4, 1835, a son of Moses Davis and Jane Van Benschoten. The Guilford Church records list the marriage of Simon Davis to Rachel Rosecrantz on August 20, 1857. Simon and Rachel lived most of their lives in Guilford, Gardiner Township, Ulster County, where Simon was a farmer. They and their family can be found in the Gardiner censuses from 1860 to 1880. These censuses show us that Simon and Rachel had 7 children, Lydia C., born about 1858, Susan M., about 1859, Emma, about 1862, Harrison, about 1863, James, about 1868, Rachel, about 1874, and Kittie, born 1878. Simon was a veteran of the Civil War having served in Company C, 120th Regiment, N.Y. Volunteers. Simon died February 21, 1895, Rachel, September 20, 1904, they are buried in Riverside Cemetery, Marlborough, NY.

Harrison
Simon and Rachel's oldest son, Harrison, was born March 15, 1863. He married Carrie Decker on July 26, 1883. The 1900 census for New Windsor, Orange Co., NY, shows 5 of their children with the following birth dates, Dubois S., June 1883, Edward, September 1885, Oscar, August 1890, David, July 1892, and Nellie, December 1894. Their sixth child, William, was born February 1903. An obituary for Harrison from April 1934, states that he was survived by all 6 children and that Dubois, Edward, Oscar, David and Nellie were then living in Middletown, William was living in East Aurora, Erie County, NY. Harrison worked for Rockland Light and Power Company.

The families of Harrison and Carrie's children are as follows:
DuBois was married twice, first to Ruth Carey, October 14, 1908, they had 2 children, Dubois Harrison, born 1910, and Caroline, born 1912; after Ruth's death DuBois married Emma Wilkinson, June 5, 1923, their 3 children, Russell, Ola and Mabel, were born in the mid 1920s. The family was living in New Windsor in the 1930 census.

Edward, married Leona Wemarcy on July 3, 1907. They had 5 children, Gladys, 1908, Edward Jr., 1910, Harold, 1916, Dorothy, 1927, and Everett. We are not sure of Everett's birth date, he doesn't show up in any census, he may have died young. The family is in the Middletown census in 1930 where Edward was listed as working for the Rockland Light and Power Company.

On the 9th of March, 1918, Oscar married Irene Barnes. They had only two children, Adah, born January 8, 1919 (see "Portraits" at left), and Robert, born January 21, 1920. In the 1930 census they were living in Wallkill, New York.

David married Florence Crum on June 22, 1913. They had two children, twin boys, Grant and Gordon, born June 4, 1919.

From the Middletown Times Herald, February 20, 1932, the caption reads - Three sets of twins, all boys--and virtually of the same age, is the distinction borne by the Mulberry street school's roster. Here they are--and do they look alike? Mrs. Edgar D. Griswold, the school principal, may revert to a system of arm bands one of these days to distinguish the brothers apart. At the left standing are Gordon and Grant Davis, of the 5-2 grade, sons of Mr. and Mrs. David Davis of thirty-seven Grand avenue. On the right are the Dughi twins--Lewis and John, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander J. Dughi of 189 Wickham avenue, In the front are Frank and Michael Palo, who like the Dughis are pupils in 6-2 grade. They live with their grandmother at fifty-two Cottage street.

Harrison and Carrie's only daughter, Nellie, married Robert Gilmore on June 18, 1911. They had 4 boys born from 1913 to 1919, Robert, Thomas, Edward and David. Previous to her marriage Nellie had a daughter, Helen, father unknown.

We do not know a great deal about their youngest son, William. We know from his obituary in the East Aurora Advertiser of August 1982 that he married Doris Gassman and that they had 3 children, William F., Richard L., and Lorane.

James
We are slightly less sure about our research on Simon and Rachel's second son, James. From the 1870 and 1880 censuses we know he was born about 1868. A James Davis of the right age is found in the 1900 to 1930 censuses, and in the 1910 census he is living two doors from Edward Davis, the son of James' brother. The 1900 census tells us that his wife's name was Margaret Spellman and that they were married about 1891. The censuses also tell us they had 4 children, Helen, born March 1893, William J., born January 1898, James, born about 1902, and Harold, born about 1907.

The only grandchild of James Davis and Margaret Spellman that we know of is a William Jr., son of William J. and his wife, Sadie. William Jr. was born November 14, 1920, he married Birtha Dubois, and they had 5 children, 2 boys and 3 girls, all likely born in the 1940s or 50s.

The Daughters
We know little of Simon and Rachel's daughters except for Rachel. She was married to David Edwards and they had 3 children, John B., born about 1893, Pearl M., 1896, and Gracie, born about 1897.

The Family of Thomas Davis Sr.
by Diana Davis Deppe

Thomas Davis Sr. lived probably less than three years in Orange County, but some of his descendants settled in the Otisville and Middletown areas. Thomas Davis Sr. was born in Ulster County in 1853 to Moses Davis and Lydia Markle. He married Louisa Rose in 1873 and they lived in the town of Rochester.

They had 10 children, many of whom are listed on a document claiming the insurance after the World War I death of their son, Selah Davis. It was this document that piqued our interest and got Richard and me off on our genealogy quest.

Their children were Ida, born about 1876; William, 1877-1967; Mary, born about 1880; Thomas Jr., 1883-1912; Emma, born 1885, died at age 8 months; Moses, born 1886, died at age 10; Selah, born 1888, died in the 2nd Battle of the Marne, France, 1918 and is buried in France; George, 1889-1971; Lily, born about 1891; Edith, born 1896.

Louisa Rose died in 1898 and Thomas married Sarah Jane Sawyer in 1900. They are in the 1900 Wawarsing census and in 1910 Thomas was a widower and living in Mamakating.

According to a Middletown newspaper account, Thomas was living in Otisville in 1913 when he was struck and killed by a train.

We have little information on the children of Thomas and Louisa except the three brothers who had families: William, Thomas and George.

William
William, 22, and his young wife Adeline, 18, are in the 1900 Mamakating census, living in the boarding house of Elmer VanInwegen. Elmer’s daughter Edith was married to William’s brother Thomas.

William and Adeline are in Mamakating again in 1910 with children Flora, 9, Roy, 4, and Edna, 2. They are not found in the 1920 census but in 1930 they are in Deerpark, Orange County, with children Roy, 24, Agnes, 15, and William, 12.

From what we know so far they had 7 children who lived: Flora, Roy, Edna, Howard, Agnes, William Jr., and Ida.

Thomas
Thomas Jr. married Edith Van Inwegen about 1904. They are in the 1910 Mamakating census with 3 children, living near or on the property of the VanInwegen hotel, on South Road in the hamlet of Haven. They had 5 children: Clara, Ida May, Harry, Edward F. and Walter C.

George
After his death at an early age Edith married Thomas’ brother, George, in 1914. They had 1 child, Minnie. Edith died in 1916 and George then remarried to Susie Wheat and they had 2 children, George and Virginia. They lived in Otisville where he worked on the railroad.

Petrus (Peter) Davis
by Richard Davis

We are still researching the family of Petrus Davis and Theodosia Ferris but we understand that Petrus was a great grandson of Kit Davis and Maria Martensen, two of the earliest European settlers of what is now Ulster County, New York. Below is a condensed, four generation Descendant Report of the family of Petrus and Theodosia, showing their great grandson, Moses E. Davis (from above article). We are keenly interested in the last child of Petrus and Theodosia, Moses Peter Davis. Could this be our own Moses Davis, father of Thomas Davis Sr. (above article)?
