Our Zandt
family originated in the country of Switzerland.
The only known ancestor of this family line is our 10th
great-grandmother Elizabeth Zandt.
Elizabeth was born at the town of Wahlern in 1606. Wahlern is a municipality
of the canton of Berne
in Switzerland
and seat of the district of Schwarzenburg. Wahlern lies in the Alpenvorland
south of the Sense River. Elizabeth
married Jeremias Portner, also a
native of Wahlren. Our lineage
continues through their daughter Barbara Portner. Elizabeth Zandt probably lived her entire
life at Wahlern. |

* Many German names have their roots in the Germanic middle ages. The process of forming family names began around the year 1100 and extended through 1600. One can encounter great variation in the spelling of surnames because in early times, spelling in general and thus the spelling of names was not yet standardized.
