Nelson county is located in the U.S. state — officially, "Commonwealth" — of Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the population was 14,445. Its county seat is Lovingston ⁶. Nelson County was established in 1807 from Amherst County. The county is named for Thomas Nelson, Jr., Governor of Virginia 1771.

Nelson County is bordered on the north by Augusta County, the Northeast by Albemarle County, the Southeast by Buckingham County, the southwest by Amherst County, and on the west by Rockbridge County.

In the 1930's, Earl Hamner began writing about growing up during the depression in Nelson County, which became the basis for the television series The Walton's.

DESCRIPTION: Located on SSR 639at the joining of Rockfish and Dutch Creeks, between villages of Rockfish and Harris Bridge.

ANCESTORS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS GEN-SITE: Samuel Scott Scruggs settled at this place some time around 1782, and after his marriage to Jane (Childress) Scruggs. All of his seven children where born here between 1783 and 1808. Samuel and Jane continued to live here until Samuel’s death around 1830.
