Jackson County is located in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of 2000, the population was 28,439. Its county seat is Altus.

After a dispute over the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819, both the governments of the United States and the state of Texas claimed ownership of some 1,500,000 acres (6,100 km2) in what was then operated as Greer County, Texas. Litigation followed, and in the case of United States v. State of Texas 162 U.S. 1 (1896), issued on March 16, the Supreme Court, having original jurisdiction over the case, decided in favor of the United States. The county was then assigned to the Oklahoma Territory on May 4, 1896.  When Oklahoma became a state in 1907 the area known as Greer County was split into the four present day Oklahoma counties of Jackson Greer, Harmon, and part of Beckham counties.

Counties that lie adjacent to Jackson are: Greer County (north); Kiowa County (northeast); Tillman County (east); Wilbarger County, Texas (south); Hardeman County, Texas (southwest); and Harmon County (west).

It is most probable that Asa Disbury Pinnell came from Maries County, Missouri to the area of Oklahoma that is now Jackson County as early as 1886*, that his mother Mary Johnson Pinnell joined him there after her husband William Lewis Pinnell passed away in 1887.   Records show that Asa’s wife Francis Hawkins Pinnell died at Altus in 1896.  It is likely that Mary Pinnell passed away in 1907 while living in Baucum Township near Altus, Oklahoma.    Asa D. Pinnell continued to live in Baucum Township until after 1920.   He eventually move to Quay, New Mexico where he passed away in 1931.

* Prior to 1896 Jackson County, Oklahoma was a part of Greer County, Texas.  In 1896 Greer County was assigned to the Oklahoma Territory and remained in that status until Oklahoma became a U.S. State in 1907.  In 1908 Greer County was divided into several separate counties one of which is Jackson County, Oklahoma.
