Introduction

Edinburgh, Coat of Arms

   Midlothian (Meadhan Lodainn in Gaelic) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland, and a lieutenancy area. It borders the Scottish Borders, East Lothian and the City of Edinburgh council areas.

     The council area was created in 1996, under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, with the boundaries of the Midlothian district of the Lothian region. The district had been created in 1975, under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, and it consisted of the local government

county of Midlothian, minus the burgh of Musselburgh and Calder, Cramond, Currie and Inveresk areas.

     The county of Midlothian was known, officially, as the County of Edinburgh until 1921, and was sometimes called Edinburghshire during the 19th century. Traces of this can be found in the name of the Heart of Midlothian mosaic on the Royal Mile, and Heart of Midlothian F.C., both of which are based firmly within the city boundaries, and are no longer part of Midlothian at all.

GENUKI: Cockpen, Midlothian - Extract from National Gazetteer, 1868;   IGI Batch Numbers for Midlothian, Scotland;

COCKPEN;   The Laird o'Cockpen

ANCESTOR(s):

Direct ancestors identified as living in this locality from at least 1695 to c. 1760 are Archibald Todd I, and wife Margaret Moffat;  William Todd and wife Helen Lawson; and Archibald Todd, II.

BACKGROUND / HISTORY:

     According to an extract from Groomes Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland c.1895, Cockpen was a parish in the East of Edinburghshire, containing at its North West corner the village of Bonnyrigg (2 miles South West of Dalkeith), and also the villages or hamlets of Hunterfield, Poltonhall, Prestonholm, and Westhall with part of Lasswade. It is bounded West and North by Lasswade, North East and East by Newbattle, and South by Carrington. The South Esk, entering the parish from the South, intersects it for nearly 1˝ miles; traces afterwards part of its boundary with Newbattle, receiving there Dalhousie Burn; and the North Esk flows, for a brief distance, along the Lasswade border. The land-surface is flattish, though rising southward from less than 200 to over 400 feet above sea-level; it exhibits everywhere a rich and highly-cultivated aspect, and along the banks of the stream is often singularly picturesque.

     Cemetery information and monumental inscriptions for Cockpen can be found at the Local Studies Centre in Loanhead.

     The parish church has records for birth dating from 1690, for marriages from 1747 and for deaths from 1747. These are held in the General Register Office for Scotland in Edinburgh and copies on microfilm may be consulted in the Midlothian Studies Centre in Loanhead and also in LDS Family History Centres around the world.

     According to the transcription of the section for Cockpen from the National Gazetteer (1868) provided by Colin Hinson the following places were villages within this parish:

"DALHOUSIE, (or Dalwolsie), a village in the parish of    Cockpen, in the county of Edinburgh, Scotland, 2 miles S.W. of Dalkeith. It is a station on the North British railway. Dalhousie Castle, the seat of the Marquis of Dalhousie, has stood many sieges, but has been greatly modernised.

"GOWKSHILL, a village in the parish of Cockpen, county Edinburgh, Scotland, 3 miles S. of Dalkeith."

"HILLHEAD, a village in the parish of Cockpen, county Edinburgh, 6 miles S.E. of Edinburgh."
