Introduction

Introduction

     Lincolnshire is a county in the east of England. It borders Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Rutland, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire, and the East Riding of Yorkshire. It also borders Northamptonshire for just 19 metres, England's shortest county boundary. The county town is the city of Lincoln, where the county council has its headquarters.

     The ceremonial county of Lincolnshire is composed of the non-metropolitan county of Lincolnshire and the area covered by the unitary authorities of North Lincolnshire and North-East Lincolnshire. The county is the second largest of the English counties and one that is predominantly agricultural in land-use.

     For the purposes of a general geographical classification the county can be broken down into a number of sub-regions including: the Lincolnshire Fens (south Lincolnshire), north Lincolnshire version of the Fens are the Carrs, the Lincolnshire Wolds, and the industrial Humber Estuary and North Sea coast around Grimsby and Scunthorpe.

DESCRIPTION:  Folkingham is a small village and civil parish situated eleven miles of north of Bourne on the northern edge of the District of South Kesteven in southern Lincolnshire, England. It has a population of 729.

FAMILY HISTORY NOTES(s): Eleanor Beaumont born 1363 at Folkingham Castle. Folkingham Castle like many castles of England traces its construction after the Conquest of England by Norman King William I.  In 1066, William the Conqueror gave vast estates to Baron Gilbert de Gant (or Gaunt), his nephew and a General in the Norman army, in return for his service. Folkingham was the seat of de Gaunt's estate. It was recorded as "Folchingeham" in the 1086 Domesday Book.  When Gilbert de Gaunt died in 1298 his estates went to Henry Beaumont great-grandfather of the aforementioned Eleanor. By 1307, Folkingham had been granted a fair to Henry Beaumont. In 1321, as some records indicate, Henry de Beaumont built "or rebuilt" a castle at Folkingham, but little remains of this medieval moated castle, of which the earthworks can still be traced.

DESCRIPTION:  Frampton is a village in Lincolnshire, England. The village is situated just to the south of the now spreading town of Boston.  The village lies on the edge of one of the great marine creek levees formed during the Bronze Age but three of four kilometres from the modern saltmarsh.  The village is one of eighteen parishes which, together with Boston, form the Borough of Boston in the county of Lincolnshire, England. The local government has been arranged in this way since the reorganization which resulted from the Local Government Act 1972. This parish forms an electoral ward in itself.

FAMILY HISTORY NOTES(s): Isabel FitzRoger died at Frampton in 1209.

DESCRIPTION: Ruskington is a large village in the county of Lincolnshire, in England.  The village has approximately 2,200 dwellings.  Ruskington is approximately four miles north of Sleaford, 20 miles from Newark & Grantham, 15 miles from Boston and Lincoln; the main surrounding settlements.

Sempringham

LOCATION:

Map Link

52° 52′ 43.07″ N, 0° 21′ 34.16″ W   Sovereign state: United Kingdom;   Constituent country: England;

Region: East Midlands;  Shire county: Lincolnshire;   District: South Kesteven

DESCRIPTION: Sempringham is a hamlet in Lincolnshire, England that is located north of Bourne, on the Lincolnshire fen edge. Sempringham is now a very small hamlet consisting of a church, a house and a well, giving little clue to the history embodied within its parish boundary. Most of its houses are a kilometre from the church, scattered along the B1177 road, between Pointon and Billingborough. The church stands at an altitude of about sixteen metres, on land gently rising out of the flat fenland and the road turning to it is easily missed. Its civil parish is Pointon and Sempringham of which the main township is Pointon. It includes also, Millthorpe and the fens of Pointon, Neslam and Aslackby and a part of the Hundred Fen at Gosberton Clough. Formerly, Birthorpe, now part of Billingborough, was included in Sempringham parish.

FAMILY HISTORY NOTES(s): Henry Beaumont born here in 1340, and married Margaret d’ Vere here in 1360.  Their son John Beaumont born here in 1361 and married Catherine D’Everingham here in 1379.
