Introduction

The canton of Berne is the second largest of all Swiss cantons. It borders the Canton of Jura and the Canton of Solothurn to the north. To the west lie the Canton of Neuchâtel, the Canton of Fribourg and Vaud. To the south lies the Valais. East of the canton of Berne lie the cantons of Uri, Nidwalden, Obwalden, Lucerne and Aargau.

The canton of Berne is bilingual (German: Kanton Bern: French: Canton de Berne) and has a population of about 962,982 (2007) of which 119,930 (or 12.45%) are foreigners. The canton is located in west-central Switzerland and the city of Berne is its capital.

DESCRIPTION:      Wahlern is a municipality of the canton of Berne in Switzerland and seat of the district of Schwarzenburg.  The municipality is called Wahlern, although the chief settlement shares the name of the administrative district, Schwarzenburg.  Other settlements in the municipality include Lanzenhäusern and Steinenbrünnen.

There is no postal code for Wahlern; mail is instead shipped to 3150 Schwarzenburg or 3148 Lanzenhäusern.

Wahlern lies in the Alpenvorland south of the Sense River.  The neighboring municipalities are: Köniz, Oberbalm, Rüeggisberg, Rüschegg, Guggisberg, Alterswil, St. Antoni, Heitenried, Albligen and Ueberstorf.

FAMILY HISTORY NOTES(s):  David, Werli Sr. and his wife Elisabeth Sturler were probably born here during the last quarter of the 1500’s.  David Werli, Jr. and his wife Barbara Portner were both born at Wahlern he in 1613 and she circa 1623. They produced at least 11 children at Wahlern between 1646 and 1667.  Of these children is our great-grandfather Johann Werli who by 1690 had migrated north about 150 miles in distance to Belmont, France where he died in 1721.
