This would have been an Engine Room Artificer, 1st Class. High degree of skill involved here, not just operating the the engines, but also making (by hand) such things as journal shells with a tolerance of ,say, + or - 'five ten-thou of an inch'. In Memory of Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class WILLIAM MacCORMICK R.N. H.M.S. "Hannibal.", Royal Navy who died on Friday, 29th October 1915.
