The Towles Family of Virginia is nearly famous. They descended all from one man, Henry Towles formerly of Liverpool become colonist. And they served as aides to General George Washington, became legislators, and even television script writers. Henry Towles is variously said to have arrived in this country from Liverpool, England in 1654 or 1664. He settled in Middlesex Co., Virginia. His son Henry Towles II purchased a piece of land at the mouth of the Rappahannock River. To this day that piece of land is known as Towles Point. The younger Henry's brother Stokeley settled in Culpepper Co. Virginia, and shipped cotton to Liverpool for sale in England. Their descendants such as Col. Oliver Towles faught in the Revolutionary War, at the Battle of Fallen Timbers under General Anthony Wayne, and the War of 1812. Many of them moved south and west to the Carolinas, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, and Texas. The name is either Scottish or Welsh, and it is known at least one of the family coats of arms is registered in Scotland.
