TOWCESTER FAMILIES
Joseph Garton Home
Joseph Garton was born in Millbrook in Cornwall, but grew up in
Towcester. His father, also Joseph Garton, was appointed Vicar of Towcester
when young Joseph was about 9 years old. He attended Exeter
College, Oxford
from 1850, and is reported later to have became Chaplain to the last King of
Hanover, George V of Hanover. George was blind due to an accident as a boy.
Eventually Hanover was annexed by Prussia and King George went into exile at
Gmunden in Austria, and died
while on a visit to Paris
in 1878. Joseph junior is last seen living alone in Derby in 1881, while Joseph
senior is buried in Towcester, with a plaque in the Parish Church.
