Joseph Garton was born in Millbrook in Cornwall, but grew up in Towcester. His father, also Joseph Garton, was appointed Vicar of Towcester when young Joseph was about 9 years old. He attended Exeter College, Oxford from 1850, and is reported later to have became Chaplain to the last King of Hanover, George V of Hanover.  George was blind due to an accident as a boy. Eventually Hanover was annexed by Prussia and King George went into exile at Gmunden in Austria, and died while on a visit to Paris in 1878. Joseph junior is last seen living alone in Derby in 1881, while Joseph senior is buried in Towcester, with a plaque in the Parish Church.
