James Monroe Long

      James Monroe Long was a son of Samuel Anderson Long and Louisa J. McFarlin. James Monroe Long was born 4 November 1854. He was married March 16, 1876 to Rose Lula Rankin. In the marriage record book of Medina County is pasted a handwritten note which reads:

Madison Calvin Davidson...says that Miss Rosa Lula Rankin is desirous of marrying J. M. Long, that she is under age and has no father living but has the full consent of her mother W. Adeline Rankin to marry said J. M Long and that this affiant is her natural uncle.

Rankin Family

      Rose Lula Rankin was the eldest daughter of Wincy (Nancy) Adeline Davidson and William Rankin. William Rankin was born in North Carolina about 1820. He and Wincy Adeline Davidson married in Cass County, Texas, 22 February 1857. They are there in the census of 1860, with daughter "R. L. age 1 4/12". The census was taken October 12. If correct, that would mean Rose Lula was born in June of 1859, and sixteen at her marriage.

      Madison Calvin Davidson had married James Monroe Long's sister, Mary Louisa Long. M. C. Davidson was also a brother of Wincy Adeline Davidson Rankin, mother of Rose Lula Rankin, so James Monroe's brother-in-law was his wife's uncle.

      The children of James Monroe Long and Lula Rankin were:

      James and Lula's son, Francis Marion, died at 25, "crippled...by diving off a cliff into a river... [that was] not deep enough".

Second marriage

      Rose Lula Rankin Long died 26 November 1884. James Monroe Long married Julia Williford on 4 November 1885. Julia M. Williford (21 November 1860-5 March 1945) was the daughter of Rachel Ellen Williams.
      Rachel Ellen Williams appears in a Bible from James Monroe Long's family as "Grandma Hudson". She had three daughters besides Julia: Cornelia Sechrist, Mary Jo Williford, and Melissa Hudson.

      James Monroe Long was known as "Roe". He died 7 February 1918. Julia Williford Long died 5 March 1945.
