Margaret Long

Margaret Long was born in Tennessee on July 24, 1805, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Joseph Long and Catherine Foster.

Margaret was married about 1826 to John Gore. In 1832, he was a member of the eight man commission who acted as trustees for the Mt. Pisgah Methodist Church of Bedford County, Tennessee. John Gore died July 7, 1834, leaving at least five children. Those children were
    Polly Gore born about 1827
James B. Gore born about 1829
Catherine Gore born about 1829, twin to James
    Hannah Gore born about 1832
    Joshua Gore born about 1834

After John Gore's death, Margaret joined her siblings who had moved to Talladega County, Alabama. Two or three of her brothers and three sisters were there. Their father had remarried and was getting, perhaps, too old to help.

Margaret's brother, John Long, was administrator of John Gore's estate and was named guardian of the Gore children. John Long was married to Hannah Gore, who was probably a sister to John Gore. So for the children, John Long was their mother's brother and their father's brother-in-law.

Margaret's sister, Anna, was married to Andrew Whittenburg. In 1842, Andrew Whittenburg was "established as trustee for John Gore's heirs to whom John Long owes $2000." At that time the heirs were named as Polly Ann, Catherine, Hannah and Joshua. The absence of James is a mystery, as he is listed in the 1850 census of Talladega County in the combined family.

Margaret Long Gore was married again in Talladega, Alabama, on August 10, 1837, to Norvell Gannaway. The marriage was performed by Justice of the Peace, James Long, another brother of Margaret. Andrew Gannaway was a widower, born in Virginia, who had older children. His son, Andrew Gannaway, married Margaret Whittenburg in 1852. She was a daughter of Anna Long, sister of Margaret Long Gore Gannaway.

The 1850 census of Talladega County, Alabama, shows Norvell and Margaret Gannaway with nine children aged 10 - 24. The marriage records of that county show a Mary Gore who married Elisha Rucks on July 15, 1851, and Catharine Gore who married John Nicks on January 10, 1856. Those are probably Margaret's daughters.

According to his tombstone, Norvell Gannaway died July 29, 1870. He is buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Talladega County. Margaret's grave has not been found.

Margaret was not known by the later generations of the Long family who moved to Texas and so is not mentioned in Enid Long Barker's outline of the family.
