Alabama |
In Talladega County, Alabama,
Gideon Blackman Gillerland, Gilleland or Gilliland married Jane Long on
Sept. 18/19, 1844. Jane Long Gilliland was born about 1827, the eldest daughter of William F. Long and Mary Elizabeth Black. G. B. Gilliland appears in Caldwell County records in 1852, 1853 and 1855.
He and Jane have not been located in the 1850 census, but may well have been in
Mississippi, where their daughter was reported to have been born about 1845.
Their two children were Mary Elizabeth and William S. Gilliland. |
A witness |
G. B. Gilliland's name appears as a witness to Henry
Long's declaration that Long had received only a bounty land warrant for eighty
acres for his service in the War of 1812, and was entitled to additional bounty
land. The date of this claim was 21 April 1855. The other witness was Benjamin
Slaughter. G. B. Gilliland died before the taking of the 1860 census. |
1860 |
Jane's brother James B. Long was living with her in the 1860 census. |
Second marriage |
Jane C. Gilliland married Stephen J. Dorris on July
19, 1864. Stephen Dorris had been previously married to Cynthia Caroline Cole.
Cynthia died on 19 April 1864. Stephen and Jane Dorris petitioned to administer the estate of Gideon Blackman Gilliland in October of 1865 . The probate records on 29 November 1865 show Jane C is surviving wife of B Gilliland. Mary E. Jeffrey formerly Mary E. Gilliland and William S. Gilliland are the only children. In June 1867, Jane C. and S. J. Dorris asked that the estate of G. B. Gilliland be partitioned between "the minor W. S. Gilliland and Mary E. Foreman, wife of Cap Foreman." The court appointed commissioners to make the partition: James B. Long, William Alexander and Hugh Taylor. The homestead of G. Black Gilliland was 177 acres which he bought from Joseph and Oliver Bishop on July 8, 1853. The Caldwell County census of 1870 does not show Jane and Stephen Dorris. Jane was living in Caldwell County in 1880, in the home of her son-in-law, Cap Foreman. Cap Foreman was also the brother of Jane's sister-in-law Mary Elizabeth Foreman, wife of James Black Long. |
Mary Elizabeth Gilliland |
Mary Elizabeth Gilliland was the daughter of Jane Long
and Gideon Blackman Gilliland. Mary Elizabeth was born in 1845 and died in 1880.
She first married Matthew Jeffrey in Caldwell County, Texas on 1 August 1861.
Their daughter Anna was born about 1868, judging from the 1870 census. Anna was
probably the bride in the marriage recorded in Caldwell County 11 September 1879:
"Annie M. Jeffrey to John S. Kirksey". Matthew Jeffrey apparently died before 1867. Mary Elizabeth was married again on January 31, 1867, to Cap E. Foreman (1851 - 1926). The Foreman family had also come to Caldwell County from Talladega County, Alabama. Mary Elizabeth and Cap Foreman had four children. Mary Elizabeth Gilliland Jeffrey Foreman died only two months after the birth of her daughter Hattie. The Mortality Schedule for the 1880 census shows "No. 27 Freeman, Mary E. age 34 sex F color W born Mississippi, father and mother born Tennessee occupation Keeping house died in April of consumption 30 year resident of the county." She is buried at Wells Cemetery. The marker reads born 8 July 1845, died April 21, 1880. Her mother, Jane, went to live with Cap Foreman and the children, at least for a time, as shown above in the 1880 census. When Jane died, Cap E. Foreman was appointed as administrator of her estate on 23 November 1882. The Wells cemetery also contains a marker that appears to read: Robert J. Son of C E. & M. E. Foreman b. 1872 d. 1873 or 1875This son fills a gap in the children of Cap and Lizzie Foreman. Their children were thus: William FOREMAN b Dec 1867 m Ella (had four children) Robert J FOREMAN b 1872 d 1873/75 Ida B. "Birdie" FOREMAN b 1876 d 1952 m. Dave Ward (no children) Hattie FOREMAN b 1878 m. Branson Fox (two children) After Mary Elizabeth's death, Cap Foreman married Ida Lawler on 20 March 1881. They moved on to Clay County and Young County, Texas. They had seven children. Cap Foreman died in 1926. |
William S. Gilliland |
William S. Gilliland was the second child of Jane C
Long and Gideon B Gilliland. He was born about 1853. He apparently married Nancy
Jane Kinney in Caldwell County 15 Aug 1873. His line has not been traced past that date. |
