AMANDA LONG
Come from Alabama |
The Caldwell County history book includes several
articles about the prominent Jeffrey family. Two tell of Amanda Long and
George Rowe coming to Texas from Talladega, Alabama, in 1859, with their
daughter Mary Elizabeth who lived to be 99 1/2 years old and married Jesse
Thomas Jeffrey. Amanda Long was the seventh of William F. Long's children.
Based on census information, she was born about 1835 in Tennessee. She died
about 1925, in Caldwell County, Texas.

Married young |
Amanda Long married George Anthony Rowe in
Talladega County, Alabama 21 or 22 April 1849. Amanda was 14 or 15 years
old. George was about eight years older, born about 1827 in Georgia.
|
Gone To Texas |
George and Amanda stayed in Talladega County,
Alabama until at least 1857, before joining George's sister Mary Ann Henry
in Lavaca County, Texas. Mary Ann and her husband, William Henry had been
in Texas since about 1835, judging from census records. George and Mary
Ann's sister Catharine with her husband Robert Long probably made the trip
to Texas with George and Amanda.
Going to Texas was usually done in groups, so
it is not surprising to find three Rowe siblings together. George and
Amanda did not stay in Lavaca County, although Robert and Catharine
apparently did.
