William Walker Fleming |
John McWhirter Fleming is believed to have been a son of William Walker Fleming and Nancy Sadler or Sudler or Sadlen. The information came from an old family history 'form' that belonged to Odus Owen (1882-1962) of Caldwell County, Texas. It was dim and hard to read in places,
and may have been inaccurate in some regard, but is the oldest record the family has found. It was written by his grandmother, Martha Elizabeth Fleming (1860 - 1949) According to research by Judson Shook, William Fleming and his wife were both born in Maryland and moved to York County, South Carolina before the Revolutionary War. William served in the Revolution under Capt Richard Sadler, his father-in-law to be. William Fleming's wife's name was read from the Owen family record as Nancy, but is recorded otherwise as Mary. Faded writing is difficult to read. William and Mary/Nancy came to Calhoun County, Texas, in 1849, accompanied by their son, Pliny Fleming. A history of the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in South Carolina refers to a Robert Fleming whose sons were Elijah, Alexander (died while a captive of the British in Camden, SC), Robert, and William who moved to Franklin Co., Georgia and "he subsequently moved to Texas, where he died"). The 1850 Calhoun County Mortality Schedule records the death of William Fleming, having died at the age of 89 in September at the home of "Pleney Fleming" - born in Maryland - and shows that his wife "Mary", age 85, also died in Sept - born in South Carolina - at the home of "Pleney Fleming". The children of William Walker and Nancy/Mary Fleming are given as:

John McWhirter Fleming |
John McWhirter Fleming married Abigail Jeffrey in Alabama, about 1822. That is deduced from the reports of their children that they were born in Alabama. Some of their children report being born in Tuscaloosa Alabam, and some married in Montgomery County, Arkansas around 1845, so that locates the family generally in the 1820-1840 era. By 1850 the family was living in Caldwell County, Texas Abigail Jeffrey was a daughter of Jeremiah and Sarah Jeffrey. Jeremiah Jeffrey (1766-1851) lived in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi before emigrating to Texas about 1851. He died on the trip to Texas, according to probate records in Caldwell County, Texas. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
