The eldest son, Archibald, apparently lived some time in South Carolina, then joined the migration to Mississippi about the time that the Choctaw lands were opened for settlement. In the 1850 census, Jane Gordon and their three eldest children list their birthplaces as South Carolina, from 1832 to 1835. They are family #518. Their other children were all born in Mississippi. Thus, their emmigration to Mississippi was between 1835 and 1837.
George Gordon's wife, Margaret, was also born in South Carolina. They had children born in Virginia from 1832 until 1845, and one born in Mississippi in 1846. George Burks could have been named for George Gordon, as Gordon was about 19 years older than Burks, or they might have both been named for some common ancestor. George Gordon named his first son Archable (or Archibald), the name of his older brother; his second son Washington; his third son Charles and his fourth son Samuel. All of those names except Archibald are common in the Burks family as well.
