Alma Rogers and Fred Hearn about 1923
Fred Hearn was a carpenter. He moved around a lot as he found various building jobs. Alma once said that they had moved about thirty times in the first few years of their marriage. Their first child was born in a little house on the property of Fred's parents. Fred and Alma and their first daughter lived in Luling for a time, as Fred built derricks for the oil field business in Caldwell County. They lived in San Antonio in 1930 when their first child started school.
By the time that school year was complete, Fred had purchased land next to Alma's parents near Poteet and had a house nearly enough finished to shelter Alma and their two little girls. Fred continued working on the house as they lived in it. It was begun with materials salvaged from an old house which was on the property when it was purchased. That old house had been built by the George Mangum family.
The house is still in the family, having been Fred and Alma's home the rest of their lives.
