Felix Grundy Hurley and Mary Ann Pate

The family of Felix Grundy Hurley and Mary Ann Pate has been in Atascosa County for over a century.

Felix Grundy Hurley and Mary Ann Pate

Family Bible records show that Felix Grundy Hurley was born 2-17-1831, and departed this life July 3, 1911 Lytle, Tx. Mary Ann Pate Hurley was born 3-10-1830 and died Oct 11, 1926.

The book Hurley Families in America, volume 2, by W. N. Hurley, Jr., states that Felix Grundy Hurley was a son of Moses Pickens Hurley and his wife, Jane Compton. It also says that Felix

was born 1831 in Tennessee and died after 1910. Buried in Lytle cemetery, Atascosa County, Texas. He was married November 17, 1853 in Dyer County, Tennessee to Mary, who was born 1830 in Tennessee and died after 1910; buried with her husband. Felix and his wife moved to Texas from Covington, Tipton County, Tennessee, with their son Charlie Clement, and daughters Mildred and Molly. They stayed first in Stockdale, Wilson County, Texas, before settling at the community later known as Ditto in Atascosa County. Felix was the first postmaster, with a general store, and they lived in a big home on a hill behind the store.

DITTO GETS ITS NAME

    C. C. Hurley is said to have been the source of the name "Ditto" for that community. When he had the store in Atascosa County, he applied to the federal government to name the post office there "Agua Negra Springs". The form had a blank for the location, in which Hurley wrote "Agua Negra Springs". Beneath that was the blank space for the proposed name of the post office. Hurley wrote in "ditto", meaning, "same as above". The post office people took him literally and sent word that the new post office was named "Ditto". So said C. C. Hurley's grandson.
If Felix was the first postmaster, then the story probably should be credited to Felix instead of C. C. Perhaps post office records can be checked to verify this interesting story.
The children of Felix and Mary Ann Hurley, all born in Tennessee, are believed to have been:
1) Aliceborn ca 1853
2) W. M. born ca 1854
3) Charles Clement born August 1858
4) Mildred Elizabeth J. "Betty"born ca 1867
5) Mary Agnes "Mollie"born ca 1868

In 1880, Felix and Mary were in Atascosa County. Alice had married and stayed in Tennessee. The first son died young. C. C. was still in Wilson County with his new wife. Their two youngest daughters, Mildred and Mary Agnes were still at home, ages 14 and 12. They were very pretty girls.

C.C. Hurley and Annie Neal were married Sep 10, 1883

His second wife, Nell, (but she was Annie NEAL) died in 1883. His third wife was Jeanette Rosalie Landrum (1870-1914). Fourth he married Lois Landrum, a niece of his third wife.

He went to Lindale, Smith County, Texas, where he bought a canning factory about 1910. He left there, and bought a store in Melon below Pearsall, Frio County, Texas, and was living there when his third wife died in 1914.
