Italian Names from Florence, 1427

Thanks to Todd Ferrante for this information!

In the process of choosing my SCA name I have been checking out the Online Catasto of 1427. This is a searchable web version of a tax census of the city of Florence in 1427. The data is arranged by household and is searchable by various data fields. I have compiled a list of all the first names of male heads of households. Sorry that females are not included, but I was looking for a name for myself, and I'm male.

I made another list of male first names from the patronymic data field. This field denotes the father of the head of the family. I considered combining both lists, but decided against this. If a son and his father were both heads of households, the father would be listed in both a name field and a patronymic field, leading to double counting.

After each name is a number. This is the number of occurances of this name in the census. Note that nine of the top ten patronymic entries appear in the top ten names in the next generation. This correlation indicates that naming practices were fairly consistant from generation to generation. This should come as no surprise because, as is the case today, many of these names have roots either in the Bible or in the names of the saints.
