WILL OF SALLY SMITH

In the name of God Amen! I Sally Smith of the County of Granville & State of North Carolina, being of sound, disposing mind and memory, but conscious of the uncertainty of life, do make & ordain this my last will & testament - in manner following.

 

Item 1st I commit my body to the dust - and my soul to its creator trusting in his mercy & goodness, deprecating his wrath and imploring his forgiveness.

 

Item 2nd I loan unto my Grand daughter Mary S. Hunt, without prejudice from any other source, the following negroes, namely Mason, Lavinia, Hillman, Davy, Little Nancy & her children namely, Sally, Unity, Howel, Rufus, & Harriet and their increase during her natural life, and at her death, I give and bequeath the same negroes and all their increase as above mentioned, unto the heirs of her body by her husband Thomas T. Hunt, namely Sally Anderson and Elizabeth Taylor Hunt; and such others as may be hereafter born unto her by said husband to them and to their heirs forever

 

Item 3rd I give and bequeath unto all my grand children, Mary S. Hunt escepted[sic], namely William A. Taylor, William P. Taylor, James A. Taylor, Edward T. Taylor, Sally T. Taylor, John H. Taylor and Samuel T. Taylor, the following negroes to be equally divided among them, namely Betty, Billy, Fanny, Pheda, Adam, Charles Weddle, Cambridge, Little Jim, Rose, Providence, Polly, Frances, Ben Brown, Lethe, Becky, Big Jim, Big Tom, Jenny, Milly, Rhody, and Lawson & their increase to them and their heirs forever. It is also my will and desire that my beds and [the word household inter-lined with x] furniture be also equally divided among my grandchildren as aforesaid Mary S. Hunt - coming in for an equal share among them -

 

Item 4th I give and bequeath unto my niece Mary A. Rawlings a negro girl by the name of Betty, which she has already in possession and the sum of one thousand dollars which she has already received, to her and her heirs forever.

In testimony of the forgoing bequests I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 9th day of March in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred & forty one.
