A Transcription of the Will of Samuel Hunt

by William M. Hunt

 

In the name of God Amen I Samuel Hunt of the County of Granville being at present of Perfect mind and sound judgment Yet Calling to mind the fickle & Transitory tenor of this Life do make and ordain this My last Will & testament in manner and form as followeth ---------

 

Item my Desire is that all my just Debts be Paid by exectr

hereafter mentioned

Item I lend unto my beloved Wife Sarah Hunt all my Lands her

life or widowhood but if my oldest son John Hunt should think

it best to sell it I leave it in theare powers so to do and

the said land at her Death to be sold and an Equall division

made of it amongst all my children...

Item I lend unto my beloved Wife all my Negroes both great

and small untell my son Groves Hunt arrives to the age of twenty

one if he should die before he comes of age my Will is that

it should be Divided as soon as my son Sam comes of age and

at the death of my beloved Wife Sarah Hunt and at her Death

the Remaining part to be.. (turn over)[sic] [apparently

writer meant "turn over this paper", since will continues

grammatically at top of next copied page].... Equally Divided

amongst all my children

Item my Will is that my Wife keep my stock of horses together

and to be Equally Divided amongst all my children my will is

that my exters sell off twenty seven head of cattle first takeing

out such as they [beast?] [probable intention was to write "as

they think best"] for the Surport of my familey the ballance

to be sold and the money arising from such sale or sales with

my crop of tobacco to pay Depts with the same my will is that

my Wife Sarah Hunt to keep all my house hold & kitchen furniture

with my still I lend it all to her Dureing of her natral life

at her Death to be equalley Divided amongst all my children...

.....and lastley I constitute & appoint my Wife and son John Hunt & Gvrs Hunt and John Hunt my executors to this my Last Will and testament in Witness whereof I have sett my hand & fixed my seal this the Twenty fourth Day of november 1798

The foregoing last Will & Testament of Samuel Hunt Dec. was

duly proven in open Court by the Oaths of Frances Hunt and Hannah

Howard Subscribing witnesses thereto & Ordered to be Recorded.

At the same time John Hunt [Sen?] & Sarah Hunt qualified as

Executor & Executrix to the same.
