A Transcription of the Will of Mourning Hicks

by William M. Hunt

In the Name of God Amen I Mourning Hicks of Granville County & State of North Carolina being of sound mind and memory, and knowing from my advanced age at present that I can not live very long, do make and constitute this to be my last Will & Testament in manner and form following Vizt

Imprimis

I give and bequeath unto my Grand-son Thomas Hunt (Son of John) my negro woman named Beck and her son Eleck and her future increase, one bed & furniture, one large iron pot one skillet three sitting chairs one Silver Ladil and one dozen of Silver table Spoons to him his heirs & assigns forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Grand-son Samuel Hunt (Son of Saml) my negro Girl Jinney and her future increase and two cows and calves to him, his heirs & assigns forever -

Item I Give and bequeath unto Sally Hunt (daughter of John Hunt) my riding horse [Cork? - name of horse?] my saddle and bridle to her, her heirs & assigns forever-

Item I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Judith Jackson My Chest of Drawers and all my wearing apparel to her, her heirs and assigns forever.

Item I give and bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Martha Minor my large brown [chest?] to her her heirs and assigns forever

Item Some time past I loaned to my two Grand Sons Groves Hunt and George Hunt (of George) each a sum of money I believe upwards of one hundred dollars, all of which money loaned I give & bequeath to them, their heirs and assigns forever.

Item If at my death I should leave any money on hand or debts, I wish the same to be equally divided between my daughter Judith Jackson and my Grand-Son John Hunt (Son of Samuel) to them, their heirs and assigns forever.-

Lastly I hereby constitute and appoint my two Grand-Sons, Thomas Hunt & Samuel Hunt Executors to this my last Will & Testament

In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this the Twenty sixth day of January A D 1822

The execution of the foregoing last Will & Testament of Mourning Hicks Decd was duly proven on oath in open Court by Stephen K Sneed & James M Wiggins the subscribing witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
