Hunt to Griffey} agreement

 

Article of Marriage Contract between Stephen Hunt Sr. of Bedford County and State of Virginia of the one part & Rebecca Griffey of the County and State aforesaid of the other part Witnesseth Whereas a marriage is shortly intended to be held and Solemnized by the Permission of God between Stephen Hunt Senr and Rebecca Griffey whereas Stephen Hunt Senr Wishes to make Provision for his intended wife Rebecca Griffey if she should be the longest live the said Stephen Hunt doth agree to give the said Rebecca Griffey [five?] hundred Dollars at his decease which money is to be returned to the mass of his Estate provided they don't bear issue in that case it Goes to them it is further agreed that provided there is no issue the Said Rebecca to give [land?] and Good Security for the return of this money to his Exors or Administrators at his death to be disposed of as the rest of his Estate Witnesseth our hands and Seals this 20th November 1818

This day Stephen Hunt Senr and Rebecca Griffey parties to the within Contract came personally before me Lewis Wingfield a Justice of the Peace for said County and acknowledged it to be their Contract and wished it Certified to the Clerk of Bedford Court and thereto be certified of Record Given under my hand the 20th November 1818

Marriage Bond for Stephen Hunt and Rebecca Griffa (sic)

Know all men by these presents that we Stephen Hunt and Samuel Oxley are held & firmly bound unto James P. Preston Esqr. Governor or chief magistrate of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the just & full sum of one hundred & fifty dollars current money of Virginia to which payment will & truly to be made to the said Governor or his successor, we bind ourselves & each of our heirs Exors admrs &c Jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed & dated the 22nd Day of December 1818

The Condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had & solemnized between the above bound Stephen Hunt and Rebecca Griffa __now if there shall be no lawful cause to obstruct said marriage then the above obligation to be void else remain in full force & Virtue.
