IDA |
Newt Young and his family lived in the Arbuckle community,
where Newt had a farm on land which had been his father's. He raised various
crops and livestock, kept bees, and every Saturday would walk to the store
at Boonford with a bucket of eggs which he traded for weekly supplies.
He often took his grandsons with him up on the mountain where
he cut hay, and the boys would ride on top of the hay in the wagon back
down the mountainside. On at least one occasion the hay wagon overturned
while rounding a sharp curve, and a grandson and the load of hay were thrown
out. The boy was frightened to get back up on the repacked load, and Newt
asked "Are you afeared?". (Even at that time, the word 'afeared' seemed
an archaeic expression, and Newt's generation was probably the last to
use the word.)
Whereas Newt inherited his father's mercurial temper, Ida
was a gentle woman who was much loved by her children and grandchildren.
Ida's father 'Jute' Boone was a noted preacher and blacksmith who lived
at Estatoe. Ida herself is remembered as a very tidy woman who every day
wore a clean apron.
Several of Newt and Ida's descendants still reside on Arbuckle.
